Debenhams is next. And if I were you, I wouldn't be storing up the WH Smith gift vouchers either:cool:

Good. The retail industry are bastards to their employees. Make them work late for no money, treat staff like scum, don't give benefits, pay shite wages while reaping massive profits for themselves (some may argue this is good business). Then try and get customers to sign up for store cards while witholding the actual APR and cost to the customer. Bunch of fuckers. I personally would love to see a few of them fall on their fat arses.

The staff may not want to be unemployed but they will see it as a lucky escape later.

Not if all you have is retail experience, and with the best will in the world, you can't find anything else. Remember, lots of the employees of Woolworths are over 40 and have worked in retail their entire working lives..

PS. Upon reading this thread I just LEGGED IT up to our local Woolworths only to find utter SHITE and a complete WASTE OF TIME.

Things had got MORE EXPENSIVE than when they went into administration. I.e. Powerade, 500ml - WAS £1.09 each, or two for £1.50.
NOW 99p each, no offer on them!

Pic n Mix, which I was seriously expecting to be in little mixed bags for 10p each, were STILL at full price.

I'm waiting now 'til closing day, me, and I plan on negotiating prices at the till

Can't win with you! According to your rationale, if you've got a job in Retail you should be glad to lose it. When you've lost your job, you're dole claiming scum!

The problems in the job market now as I see it, is that where before the thinking has been to take 'any job' to earn money, usually meaning the likes of shop work or McD's, it is this end of the market which is now being saturated by the former employees of the failing retailers with no real skills or education achievements to speak of

If you've got skills and qualifications enabling you to get more specialist work, you probably stand more chance of getting a job in your specialist market, as you will be deemed overqualified for the lower end roles!

I heard that The Pier is part of the Woolies group and is also under threat of closure. Is that right anyone?

yup, they went into admin last week. they are having a huge sale now as well, mrs starry bought loads of highly useful (eyeroll) wooden things with small drawers that are too small to store anything. but they were 70% off so that is ok. :bla::bla:

:lolol: That's really funny! Typical male response cos you're unable to see the beauty of the heavily discounted lovely wooden useless furniture haha

Plenty of bargains to be found in there today.

I know they are in administration, but for fucks sake do they really have to keep the automatic doors shut?

I saw Mrs Dullard buying penny sweets.
If they keep the automatic doors shut it will save on the energy bill that will have to be settled when they close down , it also winds up the shoplifters as they get more paranoid thinking they'll get caught.

Who could seriously give a tinkers f*** about woolies. it has been shite for years. It deserves to close down.

I worked there for 8 years and still have friends in a lot of the stores in this are who are going into Xmas with f*** all idea of what their future holds (although today's announcement seems to clear that up), and are scared shitless about it what with mortgages, rent payments etc to find.

I'd say I give a f***.

Nobody was going to buy Woolies as a going concern , I feel sorry for the 25,000 who will be made redundant and with only slim chances of finding another job straight away. The Woolworths pension fund has a £250M deficit and looks like its heading for absorption into the Pension Protection Fund. The individual store leases with existing planning permission to sell food are about the only thing that can be sold on , so we can expect more Tesco , Asda , Sainsbury and Iceland mini stores on the high street. More ironic is Poundland ending up on ex Woolies sites as Woolworths in 1909 was selling all items in the shop , at the same price , 6d (2.5p).

Well anybody else looked at the so called "closing down sale today, same crap as was in there on saturday, no reduction on the pick and mix, one shelf of very old stock at 50% off and the rest just 10 or 20% off, what has changed since yesterday?? No buy one get on free chocolates :( I've seen better offers in Tesco or my local village Co-op. All I did was waste petrol going there

I was a deprived child, because I have never (ever) had pick n'mix from wollies.

So today, armed with my girlfriends debit card, I went and bought myself a big, fat cup of pick n'mix.

My life is complete!
