Take a step back and pause. I respect the way the 'LOCAL PEOPLE' of Wooton Bassert have paid their respects to members of the armed forces making their final journey home. At first this was a simple mark of respect, however it has not taken long for it to (for me) become a media circus. I watched for a few minutes today at 5pm and was put-off when 'mourners' had travelled down from London etc, 'we had to be here' NO YOU DID NOT !! You could pay your respects in any churchyard and 'pause for thought'

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Never understood this need.

If they had done the same for the first day of the Somme (or any significant first and second world war battle) they would be standing there for months as the coffins passed by. 8 casualties is the same as one WW2 bomber being shot down. Any casualty is a total disaster for those involved, but in terms numbers of casualties in any other major war, this doesn't even register.

My thoughts exactly LGB, the people of Wooton Basset have been doing this for a long time for the casualties of both Iraq and Afghanistan, and I have the utmost respect for them. However, with the recent media coverage of the large number of deaths, all of a sudden this seems to have been subject to the "Diana factor". I'm sure the families of the dead appreciate the public sentiment, but I wonder how many of these people who've treked so far, attend their local war memorial or services on Rememberance Sunday?

this has been building around swindon for the last 18 months, not only in bassett but also along A420 to oxford. To be fair the more the merrier as it must be a small form of comfort to the familys of the deceased to see so many people paying respects.

I would say the vast majority of the people were locals.

My friend from Wroughton hopped on the bus to attend that, it was very impressive to see the videos of it all. :)

It's just a shame that this village is the exception and not the rule.... We should all be showing such respect to the service men and women.

It's all a bit too much. I mean in total how many soldiers have we lost in this war? 150? Compare that to how many man we've killed and I'm sure we're MILES ahead.

Yes any death is sad, and tough for families etc. but this is war for crying out loud. These men chose to join the army and go out there and they, and there families, should understand the obvious risks.

Yes they knew the risks as did I in the RAF for 30 years its just a pity that you cannot chose who to protect and who not to protect as I am sure an arrogant little keyboard soldier like yourself would be afforded no protection.

You talk a big talk but would you do it to the face on any member of the Armed Forces? I know the answer is no because you would scurry away as fast as a frightened rat.

An act of war is not like football or cricket, scores are not kept on the number of dead, The reality of the situation is kill or be killed, initially when the UK forces moved into Afghanistan the Govt of the day said they hope a shot is not fired.

Deaths are actually I think now 186. Watch the news and read the background about any conflict before mouthing off.

As a serving member of the Armed Forces i find your comments ill founded and damn right f***ing ignorant. I actually served at RAF Lyneham near Wootton Bassett from 03-06 and i for one am fully aware of what high regard the forces are thought of round there and rightly so. Your comments are naive and quite clearly designed to provoke a response well congratulations you've got one. Camera crews and reporters attending the repatriation done so because the majority of this country appreciate what the forces are doing out there and have been doing out there and Iraq since 2001. You made a comment about 150 deaths as if that isnt enough for you to warrant such media attention. Perhaps if you saw 150 coffins lined up or god forbidden lost someone close to you as a result of this conflict you would think differently. I would suggest you think long and hard in future about comments of this nature that you choose to post and the implications of what your actually saying.

Good post, spot on. I hope and I think you'll find the hugely vast majority of people in the UK do support our servicemen and women (irrespective of the politics of whatever they're being asked to do) and the respect paid by the people of Wootton Bassett is representative of the nation.

Well that is stating the obvious. Sadly the suffering that these families are going through will be the same that hundreds of thousands of families in the middle-east have gone through over the last couple of decades of western intervention.

Imho those soldiers that have died in the last week have died for nothing but the political vanity of the people who sent them out there in the first place, and that is something really worth getting angry about!

What's wrong with paying your respects (to non-celebrieties) out of respect for those that died and their families even if you didn't know them? Just ignore the news if you don't want to watch it. But your irritation at 5mins of media coverage once in a while concerning the war our country and service personnel are fighting on our behalf really isn't comparable is it? My thoughts are that you should shut the **** up.......

Yes but when dealing with idiots like him i feel it neccassary to point out the bleeding obvious. As for the Middle East suffering at the hands of the western intervention its not the troops that declare these wars its the politicians. We just get sent there as a result of our failing Government. I can assure you 95% of the armed forces dont feel we should be in Afghanistan for various reasons just like the public dont. But we're there because thats our job. Whether its morally right or wrong the reasons for invading a country we go where we're sent.

Its because of such men that people like youirself enjoy the freedoms of our society enabling you to post comments such as these here. Likewise having served myself to protect those rights for myself and others I am also free to make such comments including; Show some respect you cowardly short sighted prick and understand that whilst they chose the army it is politicians that make war and send them off to Afghanistan, they have no choice in that and get on with doing their duty. Suggesting they and their families should accept this and be done with it makes your post a solid gold contender for wanker of the year. Rarely does this board illicit such a response from me but in this case I make an exception.
