Newspaper reports in Spain suggest that Newcastle defender Jonathan Woodgate could be the next Premiership star on Real Madrid's hit-list.

Michael Owen recently completed a surprise move to the Bernabeu from Liverpool, joining former Manchester United midfielder David Beckham in the Spanish capital.

Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira was another target, and Spanish daily newspaper Marca now believe Real are ready to make a £9m offer for Woodgate.

The fact that the England centre-half has been out of action since April would cast doubts over the validity of the article, however.

In fact, Woodgate is due to see a German specialist about his thigh injury this week and will remain on the sidelines for at least another fortnight, according to Sir Bobby Robson.

Woodgate, 24, has played in only 28 league games for Newcastle since joining from Leeds in January 2003.


i dont believe this is true, however after signing that defender from roma as well and with another centre back like him, surely unbeatable if they play as a team?

£14 million is a good price for a crocked defender. You would not be in Germany seing a specialist if you did not have a serious long term injury problem!

What's with Real Madrid chasing English players lately? Is Beckham influencing Camacho behind the scenes?

And why Woodgate? Great player, but too injury prone, and a club like Real Madrid can attract the best players from all over Europe. £15m is crazy money to spend on Woodgate :eek:

Real 'close' on Woodgate

Jonathan Woodgate is on the verge of joining Real Madrid, according to the newspaper that first revealed the club's interest in Michael Owen.
Marca claims a deal has been reached for the 24-year-old Newcastle defender, who will join Owen and David Beckham at the Bernabeu for a fee of about £15m.

Madrid coach Juan Antonio Camacho is desperate to boost his defence.

But Woodgate is still expected to be out for two to three weeks as he recovers from a serious thigh injury.

And the major stumbling block to Woodgate's transfer could be the medical.

The transfer window closes on 31 August and the defender would have to prove his fitness if the move was to happen.

Woodgate has not played since rupturing a thigh muscle in April and recently visited a German specialist in a bid to discover why it has taken so long for the injury to clear.

The defender has managed just 28 league games for the Magpies since his £9m move from Leeds in January 2003 and played 18 times in the Premiership last season.

Marca further reports that Camacho himself recommended signing Woodgate to the Real board, while the club were also said to be interested in Inter Milan's Fabio Cannavaro.

Real have already bolstered their defence this summer with the signing of Argentine defender Walter Samuel from Roma.


Jose Angel Sanchez - who negotiated David Beckham and Owen's transfers to Real - is reported to have recently visited Tyneside to try and thrash out the terms of a deal.

Woodgate, who joined Newcastle from Leeds in 2003, has three years left on his current deal.

Leeds would not stand to make any money from the deal, as BBC Sport can confirm they did not negotiate a sell-on clause when they sold Woodgate.

quite possible..

Woodgate has played in only 37 of the 128 games Newcastle. wants around 80k a week too!

Sir Bobby Robson has confirmed to Sky Sports News that Newcastle have agreed a £15 million deal to sell Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid.
Robson insisted he did not want to sell the England international, but confirmed the defender would be travelling to Madrid for a medical.

The former England boss claimed Real's offer was too good for Newcastle to turn down - it represents a £6 million profit on a player they signed from Leeds in January 2003.

Woodgate's time on Tyneside has been plagued by injuries and Robson admitted there was still a chance the centre back could fail his medical in Spain.

"We are going to make a handsome profit on him, but we are not interested in the profit we are just interested in the player, but it's a huge offer and the club had to consider it," Robson told Sky Sports News. "I understand that but I don't want to lose Jonathan Woodgate.

"It's a huge sum of money, but it's a huge opportunity for him, do we deny him that opportunity? There is a moral issue here.

"He has a medical to pass, I think that is first and foremost.

"If he goes there isn't one person in this building from the chairman down to the youngest fan who won't be sorry to see him go.

"But he may not go. He may not want to. He may fail his medical, I don't know.

"Players do fail medicals, there isn't any reason why he should because the injury he sustained was almost four and a half months ago and he is almost through that, he's almost ready to play.

"That would be the only element that would affect his medical test because he has no other flaws in his make-up or character or body.

"So there's a good chance, more than a good chance he will pass his medical."

The Toon chief went on to confirm that Kieron Dyer had refused to play for the club in last weekend's Premiership opener against Middlesbrough, but says he is now happy to forgive him.

Following Dyer's public apology Robson wants to put the matter to bed and insists there is no chance of the England star leaving St James's Park.

"It was au unwise decision he made, I was stunned at the time," Robson continued.

"He refused to play, he said he wouldn't play there as it wasn't his best position.

"But the boy is very sorry about that situation and admits he has done wrong."

Asked whether Dyer could continue at the club, Robson stated: "Yes he can.

"He has apologised as he had to and he has done it willingly and we get on with our lives.

"End of matter, he doesn't want to leave the club and he doesn't want a transfer."

Who would have said 18 months ago that the spine of the Real Madrid team would comprise Englishmen.

This has got to be good news for our World Cup qualification campaign
