Nearly two weeks ago my Mum passed away. I haven't been on here since.

My old Mum was football mad. If there was a game on the proper telly, she watched it. Whenever I was playing as a kid, she was there. Same with the grandkids. Snow or blow, she would be there watching them play.

She was there too in the family stand with us at Withdean and sometimes at The Amex too. Away trips included the likes of Millwall and Luton, including that midweek Southern Area Paint Pot Final loss. Fond memories

She loved watching the women play too. As she always said... They just get up and get on with it, not like the men who go down like they've just been shot.

I was desperate for us to win today. Beyond words desperate.

So this one is for you Mum. Our Lionesses have done us proud, just like you did!

There was one similarity with the men’s game I loved tonight … the verbals between the rival players, especially in the last 10 minutes. Geordies and Mancs telling the Germans to do one.

Congratulations! Worthy winners.

Some thoughts:

England are probably going to remain strong as long as Sarina Wiegman is in charge, but it will be interesting to see if they can keep her. This victory along with winning a title with another hopeless serial loser-nation (Netherlands) means she will get offers from the men's football world and I don't know if she could resist that challenge.

The ref was hideous. In Germany and elsewhere there will be a lot of talk about the 110% obvious penalty they should have had in the first half and that there was absolutely zero done about the timewasting in the end.

Great for England that Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo and Ella Toone played key roles. For a while it has been looking like it would be difficult for England to really replace Hughton, Scott and White as the key (well, along with the somewhat younger Kirby) players, but they've really shown throughout the tournament that they're up for it.

Will be interesting to see the consequences of this. The FA and the clubs etc. need to pour petroleum on the momentum because despite this great night, this next step in the evolution of women's football is not just going to happen by itself.
