It is so easy for media to highlight something that has gone weong. In last few months 2 relatives have attended A&E at Sussex County and a friend at Haywards Heath.. All recieved very good care and attention.

The waiting lists tell the story of a broken NHS, getting an appointment at Woodingdean Medical Centre is a joke. Was told by the ambulance people that you are better off getting a taxi to the hospital than waiting for ambulance ( though i guess that depends on the problem) . People on beds in A&E for many, many hours and that is normal not the odd exception.

It's a massive problem and just throwing money at it won't solve the problems. When I was 16 and later at 21 I spent 10 and 14 days in hospital respectively , one thing was clear to me is that despite the old buildings and lack of technology they were far better organised.

When’s the RSCH finally getting its £48m new emergency floor, the detailed plans were approved years ago?

It’s always been a dump with huge queues, disrupted by alcoholics and drug users. I spent half day there queuing in 1975 after a primary school cricket accident, again in 1982 after a secondary school incident.

I wonder if other UK cities have far more impressive arrangements?

When you had your hospital stays, I would suggest hospitals were operating with spare capacity. They don't now.

Totally agree , also the matron or senior staff nurse ruled these places and were in charge of food and cleaning. I have seen nurses run off their feet at the RSCH and then loads of cleaners aimlessly walking around but the place is never clean , they are someone else's responsibility.

I will also upset a few people , Brexit has made things worse. I would guess 40% of the Oncology nurses were Spanish speaking and a proportion have now gone home. Just on example of unnecessary shortages. They also down a few consultants in that department.

Capacity was deemed wasteful when Thatcher started closing wards in the 80s.

Hard working men and women pay taxes so the poor can receive health care.

But half-full wards, that could be converted to income earning enterprises, no that's not the Right Way.

If that's the only time you have had to be A&E you are a lucky man. Unfortunately I have had quite a few stints and yes still a lot of drunks & drug users. Police have been there pretty much every time (no not for me) with queuing in corridors for the more serious cases. RSCH is recognised as having problems.

Sadly, fairly regular visitor. Including with loved ones in grave mental health issues, son’s severe infection two Xmas’s ago, other stuff.

I mentioned events from the ‘good old days’ because they weren’t. It’s been a dark, dingy tip for 50 years, with huge queues. So bad that in the 00’s we cheated and went to the efficient Worthing A&E.

It’ll be a good day when the RSCH emergency is completely replaced and expanded.
