I suppose if you have a bad time in a place, then it will strike a louder chord when thinking of 'worst cities'.
I've not heard great things about Caracas, Panama City, or Detroit - are they on the list?

Detroit was worst

Edit

1.Detroit,
2. Accra, 3.
Seoul,
4.Los Angeles,
5.Wolverhampton,
6.San Salvador,
7.Chennai,
8.Arusha,
9.Chetumal.

My great great great grandfather moved out of Wolverhampton in the 1840s to make a better life for himself in ... er ... Middlesbrough.

He died in the workhouse. But I'm sure the forty odd years he spent in the Middlesbrough area were much better than languishing in Wolves.

It says something about your city when a principle claim to fame is to have the best-known ring road in the country – because a tramp lived on it.

It says something about the editorial standards of the Telegraph these days that it can't spell "principal" - Bill Deedes must be turning in his grave.

I went with someone from Wolverhampton in 1984/85. I didn't find the place to be a dump at all - I've seen plenty of worse places - most of them in South Wales: Newport, Merthyr, Neath, Llanelli and Port Talbot are all much worse.

Yep, on the occasions I've been there I've always thought I'd prefer to be wandering the streets of Mogadishu in my Albion colours.

Agreed (assuming my irony detector is turned on). Wolverhampton ain't that bad. f*** sake it's not the 5th worst place in Britain.

Dundee? Stoke? Luton?

I spend a fair amount of time in Wolves and I think its great!

DEFINATLY not the worst 10 cities in the UK let alone the worst 5!

Yes there are some parts that arent great but what city doesnt have them?

I had heard that the people who decided this list havent even been to the city in the first place!

Reading is an infinitely more soulless and horrific place, although it isn't a city so presumably doesn't qualify.

These things are always badly thought out with no research anyway. There's nothing quantifiable to judge these cities on so it's just opinion and all it takes is for a few people with a grudge to kick up a shitstorm and suddenly their target of hate makes it onto the list.

When I used to live in Winchester there was local outrage at the first Idler Book of Crap Towns when it was published, ranking Winchester as one of the "crappest" towns or cities in Britain. The fact that it's steeped in a rich cultural heritage, lays claim to being England's only other capital city, boasts some superb architecture and some of the finest old boozers in Blighty seemed to count for nothing for the editors of Idler.

Turned out that one of the editors had had a public school upbringing in Winchester and obviously didn't enjoy it, probably because he was bullied and sodomised regularly, so took his ire out on the city in his little book.

LA 4th - downtown LA is a do-go zone after dark, but by day it isn't all that bad.

Wolverhampton isn't the nicest place on Earth, but it doesn't deserve its' reputation. For a start, it isn't even the worst place in the Black Country. Dudley, West Bromwich and Sandwell are all far worse and in dire need of investment. Some parts of Walsall are pretty bad too, but where they have regenarated, its nice.

Visit Wolverhampton on a regular basis as my wife was originally from that area and i have to say i agree with your comments. It is a little rough around the edges but there are nice parts (Tettenhall for example).
Your right about West Brom and Dudley;every other building seems to be boarded up.I would choose wolves over the likes of Oldham, luton etc any day of the week.

Sheffield is worse than wolves. FACT.

I was working in Sheffield today, isn't that where David Blunkett from? I think he designed the city centre, but it isn't that bad, and the Woodhead Pass on the way home was spectacularly beautiful.

God knows how they came to that conclusion, utterly ridiculous list.

I could think of many worse places, but from personal experience I'd go for Djibouti, & in the UK, Rosyth.

Is Rosyth a city?

A good point well made, I withdraw Rosyth from my UK nomination & throw back Stoke, (especially the Burslem bit).

However, Rosyth is a class A shithole incase they do a list where that may be included.
