Wireless Networking at Home...

Right - me being a techno-dumbo I need some help please!

Zef has just got a laptop for work which is super duper and has wireless capabilities! We've got our PC (with broadband) and I'd like to set up a wireless network so he can connect to our broadband when he's working from home.

I'm presuming I need a thingamajiggy to attach to my pc to send out this marvellous wireless signal - but I need recommendations and of course I'd need to know what this thingamajiggy would be called (as I'd look a bit stupid asking for a doobrey to connect to my thingamajiggy at PC world)

Any helpers please?

Depends on your t'internet connection. If you're on Cable Broadband the Netgear stuff is popular. There was a thread on it a while back, but the search doesn't seem to be working too well right now.

Depends on your t'internet connection. If you're on Cable Broadband the Netgear stuff is popular. There was a thread on it a while back, but the search doesn't seem to be working too well right now.

I'm on Tiscali Broadband - is that cable broadband? (by cable do you mean on my phone line?)

If you contact Tiscali tedebear, they may upgrade you and supply a wireless router.

Are you certain that you don't already have a wireless router? Silly question but worth checking first! Only our broadband has always been delivered by a wireless router so when I got this Mac I just turned it on and Airport found the router that lives down the hallway in Lord B's Grotto.

Those ones that use the mains are supposed to be good, and getting cheaper all the time.

I did check - you never know your luck - but alas no we don't!

It's true you need a wireless router (it sits between the PCs and the 'Modem') but I think you'll need a wireless card for your desktop although the existing RJ45 (should be between your 'Modem' and the desktop PC) should plug into the router (behave !)

As it is I use Netgear stuff which works fine but PC World will try and sell you Belkin stuff and I know I'm not the only person who has an issue with their Wireless stuff.

Wont need a wireless card for the desktop, plugs straight into router, her laptop is already wireless enabled so shouldn't have any probs.

Surely if you have a wireless router you may as well get a wireless card for the desktop to get rid of all the wires.

Dont forget to sort out the security, otherwise anybody within range can use your wireless connection to get online themselves.
