Up here on the left.
The reason Mercs and BMW's etc struggle in hard packed snow is due to their low profile wide tyres. Winter tyres are ok but how often would you change them and where would you store the other set?

Try these. They had a Groupon deal on them a couple of months ago.

Somebody told me that you have to inform your insurance company if you put on winter tyres, as it counts as a modification to your car - is this true?

Correct.

If you were to have an accident, whilst running with winter tryes and had not informed your insurance company then your insurance would be null and void.

winter tyres will give you less miles to the gallon. So will driving round with 100kg of sand in the boot. get some cheapy chains and some old carpet and if you ever get stuck, use them to get you out.

yeah might lose a couple of mpg, but for the two days a year we have substantial snow down south its certainly easiest.

Not true.

if this were true, then running with any tyre other than the original manufacture's would affect insurance, shirley?

Nokian, vredstein, continental and Michelin snow tyres are the better ones on the market. Best thing to do if you have the storage is get a spare set of steel wheels for them if you can and store through the months above 7 degrees and always fit in a set of 4. Snow chains will damage your tyres (winter or summer tyres) but "snow sox" will not - and give much needed grip without the need to strap chunks of metal to your tyres.
