I’d say I have a 90% vegetarian diet. I am not a great cook and can’t afford to buy good, ethically reared meat very often (I don’t want to buy or eat cheap meat) so I leave it to the experts for a treat a few times a year.
Don’t miss regular meat dishes at all and feel much “lighter” if that makes sense.

Absolutely agree. I generally eat seafood when I'm out because I'm clueless about cooking it myself and I find it much easier to cook vegetarian dishes.

Edit: both my adult kids are vegan so there's an added incentive to keep meat and fish off the menu at home.

The Willow Tree has a nice beer garden and is a little out of town so might have space if the rest is busy.
Another recommendation for Black Boys,I think the Eclipse was good and a few pubs near the cathedral were nice.
I've been the Rick Stein's and I think it's very well done there.

There was also a very nice cafe/bar that did jazz occasionally but I can't find it online so may have closed. It was really good for breakfast and lunches.

I would also recommend the Gurkha museum but each to their own.

Great stuff, thank you. Gurkha museum is on the wish list.

Ohh. Never heard of him but yes, I agree that does seem very much worth a look. Only £6 as well, can’t be bad! Cheers!

He’s famous for his paintings of the East Sussex landscape and has a permanent collection at the Towner in Eastbourne.

Black boy is on the list already, I’ll check the others out, ta.

Wykeham Arms is very quirky and well worth a visit. I have to inspect it 4 times a year.

Sammy Lee lived there (rented a room) all the time he was assistant at Southampton.

I lived there for a few years.

Lovely board walks over the water meadows or from the cathedral round past the Bishop’s Palace.

Hyde Abbey, Hyde gate

Winchester Barracks,

Peninsula Barracks is nice just to wander round the square, just past Westgate (near the St James’ pub, my old local!)

Jane Austen’s house

King Arthur’s round table in the Great Hall

St Swithun upon Kingsgate church is very picturesque

The Wykeham Arms in Kingsgate Street, typical Winchester pub

There’s the Gaol house pub in Jewry St, but it’s a ‘spoons now

The Royal Oak in the High Street claims to be the oldest bar in England

Lainston House outside Winchester used to be nice for a lunch or dinner

Cadogan is a good men’s clothing shop, a bit chaotic inside but worth a look

That should keep you busy!

I stopped off in Winchester when I was in the UK back in November. I went to a cafe called The Square Winchester and had a coffee and sandwich. It was a great little spot with a patio out the back.

Go to the Tourist Information place at the bottom of the High Street (opposite King Alfred's statue) and go on one of their guided walks. Well worth it.

For an old, atmospheric pub, I recommend the Wykeham Arms, on the far side of the cathedral.
