[Other Sport] Wimbledon stripped of ranking points

The ATP has decided to punish Wimbledon for its decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament by stripping ranking points from the tournament this year.

The decision marks the most significant split among the tennis governing bodies in a long time. It means that Wimbledon will essentially be rendered an exhibition event in the ATP tennis ecosystem, with players unable to earn the ranking points this year as they do at all other official tournaments in the year. Those who performed well at last year’s edition will be unable to defend their points, meaning there could be significant disruption to the rankings. The WTA’s decision is imminent.

Which demonstrates how completely out of touch a number of these sporting associations are.

It hardly mirrors public opinion and they have their collective heads in the sand if the think sport isn't political or at best used politically.

As much as I hate tennis (and I really really do) I'd hope the most famous tournament in the world doesn't care.

reckon most player care little about the rankings, the prize pot is why they are there.

The ATP decision means Serbia's Novak Djokovic - the defending men's champion - will lose his status as the world number one.

I don't think it'll matter to the players - Wimbledon will still be the one they want to win.

But still...what a twattish signal to send. Wimbledon will be the only tennis I'll be watching this year.

Pathetic from the ATP. There's a war going on, thousands are dying, millions being displaced as Russia shells the f*ck out of one of its neighbours, so The LTA quite rightly falls in line with every other major sport to ban Russians from competing in its biggest event. And the dickheads at the ATP utterly fail to read the room, citing it as being down to "discrimination" against Russians and Belarusians. What is the MATTER with the people making these decisions ?

Wimbledon won't be diminished one iota by this. The ATP have just made themselves look incredibly stupid and utterly tone deaf.

Well, well done Wimbledon and the LTA. Now that is a statement I never expected to make in my lifetime!

Still won't be watching though - and my level of interest in who wins is on a par with the golf and the darts!

Indeed well done, some things are bigger than sport. To have the countrymen and women of a nation engaged in " ethnic cleansing " of a neighbouring country at one of your countries most prestigious sporting events is tantamount to mimicking the 1936 Olympics . Russia and its few allies must be hounded out and banned from all levels of sport and the arts.

I would have thought it might have been better to invite Russian players so everyone can vent their feelings to them and convey the message what a despicable country it is.

I imagine all the other grand slams will follow Wimbledon. Which makes you wonder what the ATP hope to achieve.

In many ways it is fortunate that Wimbledon has already announced a 14% increase in prize money for this year's tournament to take total prize money to a shade under £40m which should keep the majority of players happy and ensure the players can beat the cost of living crisis and 10%+ inflation likely when Wimbledon comes around.

Of course it is! Pathetic in my eyes, and Wimbledon is the only tournament I make a point of watching, as/when I can.

Totally ridiculous decision, and one that I hopes comes back to haunt them.

I really hate tennis.

When I first started out in work I was carrying cameras / buying food for participants in a children's sports programme.

We were on this shoot at a very famous tennis club filming wheelchair tennis.

Although this had been fully organised months before, certain "officials" associated didn't like the fact / wheelchairs on the courts and subtlety attempted to "disrupt" the shoot including an attempt to claim certain buildings couldn't be filmed and hoovering the court next door.

It was nonsense and the LTA (from memory) sorted it out.

The production company returned for another programme and moved the shoot to the inside courts to avoid the snobs.

Since then, I'm always distrustful of anyone dressed in a blazer.

Put me off tennis for life and I haven't watched it since.

Still in Brighton
yet "the ATP have announced that the UK summer tournaments at Queen’s and Eastbourne will not be stripped of ATP ranking points"? Seems they are just picking on Wimbledon.

I've grown to love tennis having watched a lot in the last 12 months, would love some time in the future to combine a weekend break abroad with some matches at smaller tournaments such as Rome, Madrid or Eastern Europe. Particularly find the mixed doubles match ups interesting, men serving at women etc. As an aside, has anyone been to watch at Eastbourne in previous years?
