Go to Belgium.

True, that is lovely, weird and wonderful stuff too - I love Belgium and LOVE Belgian beers, it's an easy 2nd on my list - but I've not had many Belgian beers that compete with the really good German ones I'm afraid. I like a nice Kriek, for example, but that purity law of 1516 floats my boat - like their cars, German beers are reliably fab in huge volumes, whereas some of those fruit beers are nice for 1-2 but that's about it.

dunno about that , they are our rivals for many footballing reasons . They are not supporting us for many reasons unrelated to football.
Okay then what about Rangers-Celtic, ManU-Liverpool, ManU-Man City, Liverpool-Everton, Portsmouth-Southampton?

It always puzzles me why some English fans get upset that Scottish, Irish and Welsh fans want us to fail.

It really doesn't bother me in the slightest, football's all about rivalry and competition. They are our rivals.

Our own club is part of It suppose and its hardly an international or european competition. I think thats very different to Champs League/World cup. Id rather see Rangers win it then Ac Millian or Barac everytime.

I just don't get all this wishing well on teams other than your own. I hope they all lose really. :p

Koelsch is lovely - you get it quite a lot in Clerkenwell, for some odd reason - but it makes me pee like a fire hydrant.

Koenig Pilsner *sniff* I love that stuff more than some people like Steven Spielberg

Personally I can't stand the fruit beers - far too sweet for my liking.

Try dipping into the wondrous realm of the trappists, in increasing order of greatness: Chimay, Westmalle, Achel, Orval, Westvleteren, and finally Rochefort (the beer on the left of the Duvel in my avatar is a Rochefort 10 - the world's greatest beer bar none   ), and the planet will never be the same again...

is literally 1 minute away from my work and will sell ALL of them, I'm sure.

In London village.
Will be supporting Ingerlund and unless we play them Poland.

If Scotland, Wales or Nord Iron were playing I would want them to do well as home nations.

(Republic of) Ireland are a foreign country and I see no more reason to support them than any other country. Other people may , of course, have family connections which is fine as long as we escape from the assumption that they somehow "deserve" our support.

I'd be well impressed if you can find the Westvleteren. It has a tiny output and no distribution network. It's hard to come by even in Belgium - generally the only landlords that stock it are those devoted enough to have driven to the abbey and bought it themselves.

Indeed,

Just cos we have a half decent team and they dont. If Scotland/Wales/Ireland were in the world cup id hope they did well, same as I root for all English teams in Champs League

on 5 live the other morning, there was a discussion about just this and the point was made about the home nations supporting eachother. The consensus was " Why should they?" the likened it to Celtic fans supporting rangers or City fans supporting United in a final or something like that.

the groundswell in Scotland was that they hate the English and therefore would hope that whoever played England they want them to win. It was not as strong in wales ( even though we have been bastards to the Welsh since Edward The Confessor's days) The N Irish split on religious grounds ( no surprise there then) and the Irish are ambivolent.

It was a very interesting survey.

Despite my mixed ancestry I consider myself to be 100% English. I support England and no one else. Of course if England aren't playing I sometimes pick another team, and like most other people I often support the underdogs, so sometimes I do find myself cheering for Ireland etc.

However I neither know nor care whether the majority of Welsh, Scots and Irish are supporting us or not. I don't see why they should but I'm really not fussed. The people who piss me off are people like myself, English born and bred but who support another country (perhaps because of family connections) because they think it gives them some kind of ethnic cachet.

Can't agree with that part. It all depends on the way in which you're brought up. For example, my father is Irish, my mother is mostly English, and I was born and brought up in Brighton.

I've been raised as an Irish citizen and sports fan by my dad, never got a say in that. I don't hate England or the English, its a great country which I've been lucky to live in. Do I always want England to lose at football? Yes, cos I'm not an Englishman or an England supporter, and its fun to take part in the traditional rivalries, for the same reason I like to see Palace or Rangers lose.

I don't think it goes beyond that for a lot of people these days - its fun.

But then have you ever lived in Ireland and do you hold a British or Irish passport.

Like Brovian I have the usual heinz variety ancestory, but was born in this country and support them and want to see the others fail.

I'll watch the games with interest, but as an Ireland fan I won't be cheering when they qualify from the group in 2nd place.

Similarly I won't be jearing when they go out in the 2nd round.
