Will we recreate this at Falmer?

Thats very impressive, but I doubt we will recreate that at Falmer as it is just a tad bigger! Dont Dortmund have the highest average gate in the world at 78,000 second is Real Madrid on 70,000.

They are also on the verge of Bankruptcy, no?

Maybe thats because they dont charge very much for their tickets! Schalke's ground looks pretty tasty too with a terraced end, although if you click on the webcam there are seats at both ends at the moment!

The working class can afford to go to matches.

15,000 @ £30
22,500 @ £20
30,000 @ £15

is all the same to the bankers.

I'm sure you posted this somewhere before:

There is no doubt about it. One of the criticisms of Falmer is that the is no room for expansion. With subtle design they might be able to squeeze 25,000 in but short of getting relegated to the Conference (where standing terraces are allowed?) it looks like there will never be big home crowds to watch the Albion again!

Only the money men would say

30,000 @ £15 = £450K
15,000 @ £30 = £450K
22,500 @ £20 = £450K

I think Dortmund managed to restructure their debts but they're still not exactly healthy. They tried to follow the Leeds United road to success (c Peter Ridsdale) by taking out huge loans and spending it on players. When they cocked up in Europe they found themselves in big financial trouble.

Yep. it is a repeat.

There is something wrong with the money men argument though! It only works if you are selling vegetables or essentials. Or petrol, electricity, water home furnishings or whatever.

Football and show business is something completely different. It is not only a product that is being sold, but a dream. The dream is we can win the FA Cup or win the Premiership (like Blackburn).

Talk away the dream and the product is less. To my mind the extra few thousand seats are quite important.

Southampton now wish they had built their stadium at Stoneham! (Radio Five).

If the Albion build stadium at Pende they could be the biggest club south of the Thames.

Doesn't that stand behind the goal hold more than all of Falmer will?

Just checked, 25,000 all standing, the biggest terrace in Europe, according to Wikipedia. That's almost as big as the Kop in its prime.

Why do continental teams, with the exception possibly of Liverpool manage to get themselves sorted to create such impressive displays compared to English teams? The flags at Italian games are an example, and why arent we allowed any (safe) flares when almost all of Europe has them?

i don't think anyone is allowed flares, just the police and stewards are a tad stricter over here

that looks bloody good though, just proves that terracing is easy to do safely, as long as you control it, which is a LARGE message to the FA

however, re pricing, as it is so cheap, the clubs therefore are generating less revenue, isn't that the reason why no german teams do ANYTHING in europe(with the exception of bayern)

Did you ever go to the Old Valley. I went there when we lost 3-4 back in the seventies. It was like a home game! Huge terraces and with only 18,000 in there (up from Charlton's previous home gate of 6,000) the atmosphere was tremendous.

In fairness, since the ban, English teams have won the European Cup twice and German teams twice (Bayern and Dortmund), I think. I also seem to remember Leverkusen being in a final and of course Utd beat Munich to win the thing. So there record is as good as ours and there is a lot more money floating around English football.

Will be attending Dortmund vs Kaiserslauten in March for my stag do.

A little part of that terrace will be home to 16 of us (mainly Brighton fans) ...

I might try and get a chant of Seagulls started or even better I'll see if I can get 25k Germans singing Sussex By The Sea ...

Its more to do with lack of TV exposure, gate receipt is only a tiny part of top clubs income.

its about £10 less per person per game

it would have some form of effect

and anyway UB, it took the english clubs a while to recover from the ban, bayern munich are an exception to the german rule because they seem to get money from everywhere

dortmund were FREAKS when they won it

What a stupid thread this is. You CAN'T recreate this anywhere in the UK - FULL STOP. Try getting those flags past a Health and Safety executive........not allowed this, not allowed that, you could poke someone's eye out with that twig, take the bottle top off that drink, chucking a toilet-roll on the pitch is a criminal offence (because of ALL those deaths by Bog-roll you heard about in the 80's....), drinking alcohol FACING the pitch is a crime where as on the concourse it isn't, or if the game you're watching has an egg-shaped ball it's ok to be pissed but if the game's got a round ball the that's COMPLETELY different, you're nicked sunshine.....blah blah blah. Health and Safety wankers.......a major part in the reason English football grounds in the UK are so sterile compared to past years.
