Presume it is the blue and white thing at the bottom of Edward Street ? So where are AMEX based now then ? Mumbai ?

John Street, opposite the Nick :) and also at Preston Park and Sussex House in Burgess Hill. Oh and Chennai, India

They have built a new headquarters behind the existing building in John Street, 7 floors and they have been moving staff across gradually for the past couple of years. Shame the wedding cake is going, Brighton could do with more office space and a refurb is all it would need.

Spent 15 years working in that building from 1989 - 2004. Will miss it.

Is the old Lloyds building at the bottom of North Street not still empty? I know they are also planning to build office space as part of the Circus street redevelopment not too far away.

Had a summer job there once. It was my first exposure to Nigerian scams, I had to manually remove all credit cards being sent there from huge boxes of envelopes. Glad we have got on top of that one in the intervening thirty years or so.

Don't forget the "UK" Argentinian offices. I will miss it though, I remember starting there and being full of excitement. It's a remenant of bad 1970's architecture though and has aged very badly. I remember when the renovated the top two floors but gave up and built a new building because it ended up being cheaper!

Also the building opposite used to house AMEX staff too, that is covered in scaffolding at present, heard that a certain Mr Bloom might own that building!

That used to be the HQ for Centurion card. Anyone who thought Amex House was bad, that place was 100x worse!

Very fair point, and I guess some of it may be down to dwindling investment, but we've recently had buckets lying around the place catching the water
Presumably they've known for some time that it's coming down, so not wasted money on a new roof etc.

Very surprising that something so new is coming down. Have they built the replacement behind it?

The new building has been behind it for some time. I read a couple of years back that one condition of being allowed to build a new building on the site is that when the 70's building is demolished Amex have to fund a public space in it's place with cafe units and the like. As stated, that'll be overpriced flats in a couple of years I would imagine.

In Haywards Heath Milton House, Eastchester and Westchester House which are all still standing on the entrance to Burrell Road.

What are they used for now?

The Card Division started with 12 staff in Haymarket in 1966

Is that Haymarket in London, or is there a street with that name in Brighton?

The Hayworth ,Liverpool arms and the Burrell did very well out of the Amex and Bain and Dawes staff.

Where was the Hayworth? I know where the Liverpool Arms was (I think it was just about the last old-fashioned working man's pub in Haywards Heath), and the Burrell is still going. I was very familiar with the Bain Dawes building, as I used to pass it every week going swimming at the Dolphin Centre from Ardingly. I seem to remember it had a huge kitchen, so it must have had a fair sized canteen. It just shows how many people commute from Haywards Heath, as I think I'm correct that it's now flats. With Great Heathmead, there must be several hundred in that area.

I think the corporate headquarters are at Canary Wharf though, aren't they? I know Brighton is referred to as the headquarters, but I'm sure the registered office is somewhere in London.

Registered head office is Buckingham Palace Road, almost opposite Victoria Station. To my knowledge there are no Amex offices in Canary Wharf.

I did a weeks work experience there once, many moons ago. It was over 4th July, so free burgers and hot dogs in the canteen.

And I looked at Elton Johns and Noel Edmunds credit card statements.

Most inner city buildings are over a 100, many a lot more. I guess it doesn't say much for modern building standards.

A decision has to be be made whether to refurb or rebuild. It's usually only after approx 90 years that the new build is economically advantageous. I think it is down to the fact that incorporating hi-tech equipment into "old" buildings is very costly.
