Saw him at a book-reading at City Books in Hove. Very funny guy. He could have been a stand up comedian with his wit and delivery. Best mates with Nick Cave too apparently.

Excellent on radio and tv but don't bother with his books.

Agree. A mate tried reading some of his books and found his use of English language a bit of a barrier...at times it was almost impossible to fathom what he was trying to say.

Now I would pay a lot of money to spent a night out with these two.....

Yup, it looked like.. WHAT THE HELL IS SHE ON?

She did that horrible US thing, "As a mother..", which Bill Bailey parodied very well on Part Man Part Troll.

I've only read one or two of his books. The one where the chap starts dating a Madonna-type music mega-celebrity sticks in my mind. I didn't find it too heavy going. Unfortunately it just reminded me of the film "Notting Hill". Perhaps that book isn't indicative of the rest of his stuff.

The author who does blow me away with his word-play and sheer knowledge of language is Umberto Eco. Took me 2 or 3 reads to get my head around Foucault's Pendulum.

And agree. I'd love to go drinking with Self and Cave.

It's nice to see that despite big ideological divide between you, you have some things in common.

Isn't that christmassy?

Quite! But it's only politics. Music and footie and the things that lift me are the stuff that really matters.

Will Self: I'm sure people would be quite happy to give up their budget flights.

David Dimbleby: Well can we have a show of hands from the audience who would be happy to give up their budget flights?

(Zero Hands)

Amusing only because he's such a self righteous out of touch buffoon.

Of course he's out of touch. He's about the nearerst we have to the Soho scene of the 50s and 60s with the likes of Freud, Bacon, Jeffrey Bernard...

Wonderfully louche and this is the bloke who did heroin on the Tory election aeroplane in 1997(?). Hunter S Thompson would have been proud of that.

Question Time with Buzzer, Will Self, Nick Cave and Herr Tubthumper. This would put some bums on seats. Maybe get Bushy in as well?

This single comment was a bit out of step with the audience BUT his comments on banks, smoking, the economy etc were spot on. He even explained to the Tory woman she was talking absolute economic rubbish when she explained the reasons for the falling pound with reasoned economics. She appeared to be quoting something she heard or read.

True. Mind you....if I was stuck on a plane with a load of tories I'm pretty sure I'd turn to smack.

Watched QT last night and have to say that I thought he came across as being a bit of a tosser...but maybe that is what he intended and I missed out on the subtle nuances of his humour!
