Will Pride go the same way as Beachdown did last year...

....if there is no money there is no money.

Pride has been rocked by yet another setback after severing ties with one of its biggest supporters.

It is thought Wild Fruit had questioned whether Pride could afford to put on the summer event.

The company, which had been due to run eight bars and a dance tent in Preston Park during the event, has now been told by Pride trustees that its bar contract has been terminated.

The board of trustees said the decision had been made as Aeon Events PR Limited, which owns Wild Fruit, had breached its contract by not paying the first instalment of its £71,000 fee.

But Aeon Events bosses said money had not been paid after Pride refused to show the company their books to prove they could actually afford to host the August 7 spectacular.

Paul Kemp, from Wild Fruit, said: “Since last year’s losses by Pride, we were advised to request to view Pride’s financial situation before handing over not only our own money but that of businesses who sub-contract bars from us.

“We have made it very clear to Pride that, without receiving or viewing written financial reassurances that Pride has enough funding to stage the event in its entirety (including both the dance and cabaret tents), we are not prepared to commit any funds.

“After witnessing the cancellation of the Beachdown festival last year, we felt it only fair that Pride demonstrated to us sufficient funds were in place to stage this year’s event with all the main attractions, and provide insurance cover for our license fee.

“We cannot gamble blindly with both ours and other businesses money, and so it has come as some surprise that we have received written notification from Pride that our bars contract has been terminated.”

Mr Kemp said Aeon Events, which has been involved with Pride since 1995, was disappointed.

He said: “It is saddening to think that this really is the end of a great chapter in Pride’s history, when local LGBT businesses were key to the event and essential funds were raised for our voluntary groups.”

Judith Mason, Pride’s fundraising and communications manager, said: “We have terminated the bar contract with Aeon Events due to a breach of contract, a non-payment.

“At this stage it is unknown about the dance tent.”

Did'nt have a problem with pride a few years back but over the last couple of years the cost of policing and ambulance/hospital cover due to this has outweighed the good if those going can't even be bothered to put a couple of quid into running the event. Why should the cost only come from local tax payers. All for the event...but not at locals cost only!!

I think the knock on effect of money spent heavily outweighs the costs of running the event, but then one needs cash up front. Perhaps donations from those attending and businesses that benefit from the event would be the way forward.

Yeah, it could. Pride has really struggled for the past three years. Mad cos if everyone who went gave a fiver it would easily survive. It'll be a f***ing disaster if Pride doesn't happen.

But why would it? It's now so far distorted from the original message that it simply isn't relevant any more. If it was such an important event then as you say surely people should put their hands in their pockets to help finance the event.

I dont think so. I feel it will be a little different and smaller this year but it will not collapse the same way Beachdown did. It has a professional and knowledgable set up behind it.

I'm pretty angry about the whole Beachdown thing, especially the people who 'ran' it. They really did not have a clue (infact they are still deluded into thinking they can start trading again), the two fezzies are very different.

If it does get cancelled I'm sure a large group of people will organise an unoffical event which is probably likely to end in tears without proper policing

Pride last year probably really suffered because it pissed down the whole afternoon!! An outdoor event like that will be weather dependent, and many people left early last year because it was bloody miserable after a while.

Exactly. I stopped going years ago.

Beachdown was a festival where people paid £50 and upwards to get in and they had acts that cost hundreds of thousands.

Pride's costs are significantly less but they have no revenue from ticket sales.

It's time for Pride to downsize...

The seaside.
When was Southern FM's Party In The Park axed (a couple of years ago, I believe)? That indicated the writing was probably on the wall for Pride sooner rather than later.

I reckon they should scrap the big thing in Preston Park, for most people the "real" Pride is the unofficial St James's Street street party on the Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Of course. However if they give it up as is rumoured by the end of the month we can tell the FL.

I wish I'd heard the rumours it was being axed a few days earlier. Just booked a weekend in Copenhagen for then (always go away on Pride weekend to escape all the people sicking up and weeing on my doorstep). Gadnammit.

They started charging for Party in the Park and nobody paid or turned up which is what killed that off
