To think just a year ago they were introducing Benjani back to the club on the pitch when we went there and were still paying players 20 grand a week.Pathetic.

The sheer joy a lot of you are getting from this really is pathetic. I suspect JCLs because Brighton fans who know their history know the feeling as a fan of their club being ripped away from them.

Completely wrong. But then look at Palace, not exactly a shining example of financial probity, so wouldn't expect any realistic perspective from that lot.

Its exactly because we know the history that we recognise the gulf in scenarios between our own situation in the late '90s and that of Pompey in recent years. In our case a hardcore of fans spotted that things were going wrong at the Club, didn't fall for the dodgy PR and challenged every move made by the then owner and his henchmen. Eventually they were driven from the Club largely by the fans, even so it did not prevent the sale of the Ground but at least a saviour was found before it was too late.

Whereas Pompey fans have been conspicuous by their absence until the last 12 months or so and on too many forums you will still see posts from them turning a blind eye to their 'spend, spend spend' approach when it was apparent to so many that they were living beyond their means. Ok the complications around the ownership of Fratton Park don't help but they have had years to resolve that and failed so far. Worse still they are serial offenders in terms of huge debts and still the fans go on about being 'too big to go bust' and 'the FA won't let them go bust' etc etc. It is commendable that their supporters trust are doing their bit now, but they have been painfully slow out of the blocks. If you look back through the life of this thread you will find plenty of Albion fans who implored Pompey fans to get their act together but for some reason (probably a complete willingness to ignore the reality and accept Prem and Cup glory bought at any price) their passionate fans were apathetic when it comes to saving the Club. Why is it that fans of several other Clubs have managed to turn things around (ok a few have failed too, but not for want of trying) but Pompey haven't?

I don't want to see another Club go bust but Pompey have crossed the 'reasonableness' line by some margin and probably ought to start afresh.

I suggest you check with the like of El_P on that. People that actually know the facts :)

Please get your facts right. Some business creditors were offered a settlement whilst the club were being hassled by the Inland Revenue (now HMRC) with winding up orders. This was at a time when football clubs couldn't take the easy option of ADMINISTRATION and a 10 points deduction from the Football League. The settlement of xx pence in the £ was in commercial confidence so the figure of 20p in the £ is complete speculation even though that sum is 1000% more than paid out by Palace not once but TWICE.

At the very least you're now accepting that you DIDN'T pay off all your debts which I guess would mean you cheated local companies out of money, which is a start. After El_P had mentioned the fact that you had created an 'voluntary' agreement with debtors in your past in another thread I did a little research and the 20pence in a pound figure is what I found. Soon as I refind the webpage I'll edit this post and link it so Blue Valkyrie won't have to have a tantrum.

Charming. I look forward to your link explaining why you haven't libelled the albion and their reputation.

I could, if I really wanted to and could be arsed to contact my old boss, show you that this statement is a load of old bollocks.

What research have you done and where did the 20p figure come from, because I can promise you it is MUCH higher than that.

Companies weren't cheated out of money , they would have been given the choice of settlement or nothing at all as the football club would have gone into liquidation. We're talking about a few thousand £'s that local businesses wrote off not £30M worth of debt that Palace wrote off in 2010 by going into administration for the 2nd time.

Damn, a palace troll not on my ignore list - not for long. A palace mug coming on here and trying to take the moral highground regarding finances is rather like Hitler giving a speech about multi-culturism in a synagogue. So COYP has evidence which consists of what? An ancient webpage he can't find which even if he could would amount to no evidence at all, what a silly nigel.

It will be a thread on NSC where a Nigel has made reference to us paying 2p in £ and a reply saying we would at least pay ten time that. The only way to confirm what % in the £ was accepted is from an actual creditor but they could be breaking non disclosure agreements.

Where has this bullshit come from? I have been a fan since to late 60's and WE HAVE NEVER HAD TO MAKE AN AGREEMENT WITH ANY CREDITOR!!!!!!!!
We came close once to receiving a winding up order from the taxman and sold a goalkeeper to Leeds,WE OWED LESS THAN THE FEE WE GOT FOR 1 PLAYER AND WE OWNED OUR OWN GROUND,the tax bill was peanuts compared to our assets and was PAID IN FULL.
We lost our ground because our own chairman thought he could wind up our club, sell the ground, pay our creditors and keep £4,000,000 change for himself and his co-owner. We have never paid a creditor less than the full sum owed.

Where do you people get your "facts" from?

Where you people are getting confused is that Archer has been reported as getting his fellow board members to sell their shares to him by the device of stating that if the club folded THEY would be personally liable for any debts that the club had run up,causing possible troubles in their other business interests.
But as the club was in control of an asset,The Goldstone, worth so much more than the clubs debt. That could never happen.

I'm with you on this one, at no time during my time of supporting the Albion which is 40 yrs have we ever paid any creditors less than what they were owed UNLIKE THE TROLLS CLUB WHO HAVE SCREWED PEOPLE OVER NOT ONCE BUT TWICE

For some reason a palace fan is able to freely post unsubstantiated rubbish on here, without providing any evidence whatsoever. And yet libellous posts are forbidden?

That first winding up petition from the Inland Revenue was in November 1992. There were further winding up petitions in 1993 which allowed Archer and Stanley to take control of the club because they took out a bank loan to pay off outstanding debts.

Today Pompey have told club staff they have to take a further 10% pay cut to stave off liquidation but I notice they are still signing players on monthly loans.
