I have to agree with you, and we all know that this happens, the biggest culprits for over breeding are the Irish.

Four day cricket, purest form of the game.

The point I was making was that without racing the breed would be in decline, the Greyhound doesn't make it into the top twenty of most popular dogs to own.

That's fine. The Sussex Spaniel is a breed like this, but I see enough out while walking the Greyhound.

I would love to see the end of the Racing industry and have Greyhound just for pets, even though we see a lot that are breed for Showing, slightly different as they have much deeper exaggerated chests. Hickstead holds the Hound Show every year if you were interested in seeing the show variety.

Something about greyhounds that is pretty weird is that they dont fall into the "like owner, like dog" concept.

Your average, law-obediant family got a golden retriever. Brainless plastic women got brainless plastic dogs. The clever, energetic lockpicking amphetamine addict got a German shepard. The fat-necked angry guy got a bulldag.

Greyhounds?

Middle-aged fat men.

Its like they have a weird competition in who can obtain the most aerodynamic dog. Middle-aged mean generally got this somewhat positive trait of being "relatively rational". But what is so rational about having a dog that is pacy and works great in headwind? You'd imagine they would go for something more efficient, like a dog breed capable of not only collecting his newspaper but also reading it to him.

One of the great mysterys.

The Black Country
Ireland are the biggest offenders, because they over breed the dogs. A solution would be to ban Irish bred Greyhounds from racing in England, which would curb the over breeding.

As the sport is in decline here I can't see why this hasn't been implemented by the GBGB, Oh silly me it might be all about the financial losses, same as Horse Racing and Football.

Yes, they are but you shouldn’t kid yourself in to thinking that greyhounds in this country don’t suffer similar fates. Deplorable sport that sees many sighthounds badly treated and disposed of if they aren’t deemed fast enough to race or once they've ‘served their purpose’. The sooner the ‘sport’ disappears, the better.

Middle-aged fat men have got it right.

In normal times how many spectators turn up at Hove. Last time I went about 15 years ago on Boxing day it was packed out

I'm not kidding myself I do appreciate what goes on but chances are the sport won't disappear all the time the bookmakers are taking their cut.

Just to put it into perspective the RSPCA had 81,146 cruelty investigations on dogs alone in 2016, this will be just the tip of the iceberg.

Cats 33,844 cruelty investigations
Equines 15, 965
Exotic Pets 4,574
Rabbits 3,982
Small Mammals 2,301
Aquarium Fish 895
Caged birds 297

Total 143,004 Cruelty investigations.

All this shite needs sorting out, but I very much doubt it will be.

I worked their for many years and saw him run many times. Hopefully its the end of an era.

Greyhounds will hopefully become just another pet breed, and stopped being over breed for money and betting.

Ballyregan Bob, is just about the only greyhound l have ever heard of. I have no truck with dog racing per se, but how many people actually attend meetings now? My best guess would be very few indeed.

They used to charge the on course trackside bookmakers for their pitches, last I heard Corals now pay them to come.

Used to be nothing finer on Boxing Day than taking in the morning meeting at Hove dogs before strolling down the road for the lunchtime kickoff at the Goldstone. Perfick day in every way

Older Albion fans like me may well remember that part of Mike Bamber's boards plan was to acquire the greyhound stadium and move the Albion there from the Goldstone. It's all lost in the mists of time but I'm pretty sure that they met their match with Corals who wouldn't budge in any way, even down to an alternate plan to buy a small part of the land for a different plan. Suppose it's a bit late now...

I do not understand your point you are making. The stats we know about from the Greyhound Industry are bad, they registered nearly a 1,000 deaths of dogs (with near 5,000 injured) at tracks in the UK 2019 and in my estimation 1000's are killed prior to and after racing every year, just from the shear amount that are breed and then unwanted.

I agree with poster you responded to the quicker the industry is wound up the less these animals need to suffer.

I agree, and in my estimation 1000's of animals that aren't Greyhounds are killed every year needlessly so get a grip and some perspective.

The OP asked if Hove Greyhound Stadium would survive the Covid crisis, I responded with "I thought that it would due to Bookmaker influences"

Any other opinions on the rights and wrongs of the sport are irrelevant to the OP's question, so I would suggest that all you do-gooders wind your necks in and **** off.

I am so lost at what your point is, you are saying lots of other animals that die inhumane deaths are higher figures than Greyhounds that die in an inhumane way, which means what, higher numbers somehow win out here.

That people that question or highlight the statistics (released by the Greyhound Racing Industry) are then do-goody people. I am confused.

Like many on here the place was a massive piece of my childhood (i worked there for 7 years, and my Mum longer) and this has lead to me having rescued and retired Greyhounds all my life. But this does not equate to liking its practices seeing the cruelty that a lot of the Greyhound Industry is.

Again I hope its had its day but I believe the billion pound betting industry will keep it and its practices floating along for a few years yet.

If I had a choice lets build an ice skating ring and Bring Back the Brighton Tigers.

Shame it didn't close down 10 years ago; would've been a good site to build a football stadium...

The money isn't made during the meetings at the track Shirley? The bookies all over the country will want a meeting and they probably don't care where it is, what they serve or who dies so long as they get a bagful of mug punters to splash their cash on a dog running around a track.

They will always pump money into the place for sponsorship etc as it keeps it going but completely reliant on the bookmakers ...... the bookmakers cash is their crack cocaine.
