I f**king detest hipsters - arrogant, up their own arse idiots who have ridiculous beards and wear trousers that are too short and too tight. Sadly most vote Green hence why we have the utter shambolic ramble in charge in our city at the moment.

I wonder what the world record for the most sweeping generalisations in a single sentence is?

"If more of us lived like them [hipsters], the world could be greener, more left-wing and less preoccupied by greed.....and the industries in which they work are driving our economy."

You can't argue with any of that can you?

http://gu.com/p/46aqj

If more people lived like then they to would be shallow vapid and treated with ridicule by the majority.

The left(and far right) has always had a hankering to "crack" youth culture, so people would live the political life without the veiws having to pass through their brains. The last dire attempt at this was straight edge, but selling veganism, abstinance and puritanism to the youth was only going to appeal to grade A jerks and the same with this.

It is a faux neophilia as if you ask them to challenge modern leftish preceps with something new, say "failed mulriculturism" then you can bet your last roubles that they will retreat into student left amateurism. Dont let the beards fool you, these are fay girly men as sure as a simster thread squealing about cupcakes and man-bags.

It is also a hangover from the Blair years. Whos political cohorts aim was to relive the 60s, in every way that is uther than what the 60s was about, challenging the political orthodoxy. The Irony being these tools are singing from their parents political hymsheets as sure as any 60s Conservative was.

They will fail for the following reasons. It is a shallowness over substance that defines youth cults and the Blair generation. The absurd reactions from them if you challenge them to redefine the modern left(cognitive disonance), and finally to anyone whos been around for awhile they do look a bit ridiculous.

I mean come on, bushy beards belong on mountain men not male waifs.:lolol:

Whether it's Brooklyn, Portland or Dalston gentrification has always happened in urban areas when space becomes limited. Just so happens this time round the folks regenerating the areas have the dress sense of 1890's pioneers - which can be annoying.

*waits for response as I sip my flat white from my mason jar whilst buying organic Quinoa using my iphone*

I genuinely didn't know what a Hipster was (although I've heard the term) until seeing this thread and doing some Wiki research.

What's the difference between a Hippy and a Hipster?

I have a beard, I wear check lumberjack shirts and large boots and jeans most days as I work outside most days, cutting wood, building stuff, coppicing etc. I came into town and even though I dressed like this for years and it's practical I realised I looked like a hipster or as I heard someone refer to the other week a "lumbersexuall". Albeit I was slightly dirtier than the hipsters I cringed at myself. They have hijacked my everyday attire and ruined it forever.

I worked for a Digital Media agency in Commercial Road earlier in the year and almost to a man or woman they were very hard working but mainly public school and thought the world began and ended in London.

Similar. I've worked for several digital/media agencies over the last few years and by and large I've found the people in them to be ok. Great work environments as well. Not all public school people, but admittedly none of what you might call 'East End Boy Made Good' types either.

I didn't even realise they were called Hipsters. Nor did I realise that Shoreditch is supposed to be some sort of Hipster Central. I found it a bit dull.

can't stand hipster businesses, in general, they try to appear as care free and friendly, but deep down they are middle class cut throat pricks who are so uptight about money and are very unfair...yet they will serve their product with a glossy smile

In the end it's just another youth cult. The beards and lumberjack shirts might make them appear a bit more grown-up but since when did genuine individualist entrepreneurs feel the need to adopt a uniform? And WOW do they scowl if you ever come into direct contact with them. Practically autistic. In another era, they'd be spotting trains at the far end of Clapham Junction Platform 13.

They would probably hate the comparison but they're the new Yuppies. Instead of stripey shirts and red braces it's beards and lumberjack shirts. Shoreditch is the new City, craft beers are the new Bollinger and mung bean yogurt is the new nouvelle cuisine.

Which is the main point of the article I posted ie they're young and upwardly mobile without the wankery excesses of 90s
