I think it’s fair to say that JPVH is widely recognised as our best CB now and Igor has been immense last few games with todays performance being his best since joining the club for me so that being said is Dunk our 3rd choice CB now?..

Great thread btw. It’s a conundrum isn’t it. It’s hard to imagine Dunk not being in the team when he is fit but I suppose that’s competition. Not sure I am comfortable with it.

I guess the other solution is it gives us the option to swap what side our attacking full back is on.

For example we could have Igor, Dunk, Van Hecke and Kadioglu as our backline and have the right side play more attacking rather than the left as we do now.

WHen Moder came on today we said "well, he'll not be playing on the left wing, will he?", and he then proceeded to play on the left wing.

So, now we have two commanding centre-backs that are difficult to drop, maybe he could just play somewhere else.

Or an American Football-style special teams player who only comes on when we get a free-kick in a threatening spot.

Both for me - when we are playing the Champions League next season we’ll need 2 or 3 of everything 🙂

I thought Solly could never be challenged for the no7 shirt when he was off last season with injury, until we signed players like Minteh and Gruda over the summer, now I’m not so sure - guess it depends on his pace when he comes back.

I would say that ‘pace’ is going to probably be an issue for a few players under FH’s fast and more direct attacking system but it’s also good to have players who are impact subs and who can score off the bench. Aston Villa have been particularly effective this season with impact subs - under FH’s tactical substitutions, I think we are also becoming pretty effective in using impact subs too.

His leadership and experience is unquestionable but based on form this season he would be my 3rd choice CB.

Nah, straight back in for me. A previously did, I think we miss his leadership and his 110% commitment.

I had a "Dunk has to go straight back in" reply all written out and I deleted it and wrote this instead because I just don't know anymore. Dunk's leadership is invaluable, and many of our best attacking moves over the last couple of seasons have started with a pass from Dunk. But JPVH and Igor are starting to look like a pairing that better suits Hürzeler's game.

We’ve badly needed to perform without him as overly reliant on him and I’m glad in recent weeks we have, we do need to get used to life without him as he gets older and naturally takes longer to recover.

I expect he will have managed minutes and may not play full 90’s now that Igor has shown his ability

Dunk will start ahead of Igor when fit and we benefit from his leadership and organisation, but we can rotate the three of the them without issue

The most curious thing..
I miss the slightly too late desperate lunge as we concede yet another.

It's tricky. It's easy to say this after a win Vs city but the defence fell apart Vs wolves, wasnt great in the pool cup game. The commentators were also saying he was struggling first half Vs city as well. Haaland got between both CBs for his goal, 2 against 1, that also wasn't good enough !!

Dunk back in for now. But not sure dunk is the answer in this system either with his lack of pace .

It strikes me that Fab is quite loyal to players who have done well, giving them another chance to shine.
Case in point, Ayari starting ahead of Carlos last night.
So barring injuries, Dunk may have to wait a bit.

I said a number of times earlier this season that I personally had noticed a slowing from Dunk, his age seemed to have caught up with him a bit and he was getting caught out on the turn more times than we have seen during his tenure to-date.... just a view.... he has a squad role to play of course, but I don't see him getting a regular starting role.
