Being at sea on a ship in the RN is fairly normal. So, not sure what he's on about, or what he expected.
I suppose adding 'Bosnia' into the story makes it seem more heroic, despite being mid Atlantic would have been no different for a seaman.

Former Yugoslavia David, Balkan conflict, ring any bells, first two tours were on Invincible and second was on Glasgow,, trying to enforce UN embargo and doing boarding party, pretty routine, as Roger asked, I left because I wanted to go back packing round Australia, thoroughly enjoyed my time in The Royal Navy, a great life for a young lad.

FTR, I wrapped my hand in after seeing my chance of getting to killick moving from 3 years to 9 years because they combined branches. PO’s would have been at least another 6 years.

I joined to travel, specifically the far east, and planned to leave once I had seen what I wanted to see, re-enforced by our ship being sent to the Da Nang evacuation on the way back from the far east. Applied for discharge on return, only to get sent to the fecking Cod War before the paperwork was processed. It taught me a trade however and ive been in comms most of my life since.

Cod war scared the shit out of me The thought of ending up in the water with a life expectancy of 3 minutes didnt fill me with joy. We were rammed by the Aegir, resulting in the only casualty of the 'war', some poor sod on the Aegir getting killed, and us limping home.

He's been oddly quiet by political standards and has said far less than a number of Cabinet ministers have said in support.

There has been no big interview until today. I'd imagine he's been advised to watch the Cummings car crash play out.

All will now depend on the police investigation.

By the look of the front page headlines in the papers this morning I think he has got away with it! The Tory press in particular have no mention of the Cummings affair on their front pages. So, unless the police investigation leads to a finding that the law was broken he can ride this out.

However, if they retrospectivly charge/ fine him for breaking lockdown that puts the PM in a rather sticky situation on many fronts... Remember Johnson said clearly Cummings had explained events to him and on that evidence Cummings had done nothing wrong. If the police fine him on that same evidence it could be said that Johnson had perverted the course of justice by stifling the investigation of Cumming's actions.

If a police investigation of Cummings turns up new information that leads to a fine it would then seem that Cumming's lied to Johnson by not being truthful on his explanation, a sacking offence, in virtually any level of politics/ public life, but Johnson can't sack him easily as he has backed him and invested a lot of effort to protect him, sacking him now would seem like an earlier gross misjudgement by the PM.

I don't think this is quite over but I think that because Johnson has little self respect for legalities and a somewhat strained relationship with the truth, him and Cummings might just tough it out.

This whole affair has confirmed that Johnson won’t be Prime Minister after the next election but we kind of knew that anyway. Will the Tories be able to force him out over the 4 years or so, that will depend on how successful Johnson is at throwing the public enquiry over the handling of Coronavirus into the long grass.

I think you could be right, but it'll be interesting to see what permanent damage is done to Johnson's credibility/popularity. It'll also be interesting to see whether the public's increased failure to stick to the rules leads to a rise in infections (dangerous for the nation, but could easily be laid at the door of Johnson/Cummings). Plus, I think this whole episode opens the door for all sorts of other "them and us" issues. If any government minister makes the slightest mis-step now, it is likely to resurrect the whole thing.

He's going to be in a very awkward place if there's a second wave of infections in two or three weeks time. Just as the rest of Europe starts opening up again, the UK will be closing down harder and, rightly or wrongly, that will be blamed on Johnson's flip-flopping on lockdown guidance.

If there's no major second wave, then he's got away with it.

I still think he'll be gone by next spring however

fair play mate .....a geordie mate of mine was in the royal engineers in the Balkan conflict , he is a bundle of nerves........another lad was in East Timor , he's rooted as well ,Indonesias version of Rwanda on a smaller scale....conflict of any kind is not to be sniffed at , imagine what our grandparents would say if they could see what's going on now.

So, apart from that, one other comment from Starmer in a week in which the PM and the Tory party is under intense pressure - that's not exactly flooding the airwaves

Not forgetting that Labour did not sign the letter written by all the other parties calling for Cummings' resignation or removal. You're spot on. Labour's strategy is to step back, and allow the Tories to keep finding more rope.
