Former Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson has said he has been "cured" of the terminal pancreatic cancer with which he was diagnosed in 2012.

The 67-year-old had radical surgery earlier this year in which a tumour was removed along with his pancreas, spleen and part of his stomach.

"It was an 11-hour operation," he said at this year's Q Awards in London. "This tumour weighed 3kg - that's the size of a baby," he continued. "Anyway, they got it all. They cured me."

Johnson's declaration came as he accepted the Icon Award at the Grosvenor House ceremony on Wednesday. In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to a cancer specialist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

The guitarist said: "He runs all the tests again and he says they think that they can do it and they did it, man... they took this tumour out of me."

Johnson played a series of farewell concerts after making his diagnosis public in January 2013 but continued to be well enough to perform. The guitarist expressed amazement that he had been "carrying that thing" - meaning the tumour - "on stage with me every night".

Johnson's operation also involved the removal of his small and large intestines and the removal and reconstruction of blood vessels relating to the liver. Following his operation in April, his doctors were said to be "hopeful that the prognosis for Wilko will be positive".

Unbelievable. Great news.

I was just going to post this - I heard it on the 6 Music news just now.

Let's hope he stays free of it. His positivity - could it have been a factor in him beating his cancer?

Beat me to it, heard it on the 1700 BBC News and it was a great antidote to the doom gloom misery stuff (apart from the S Club 7even reunion of course).

Tomorrow my wfh will mostly be accompanied by "Stupidity" turned up to 11.

That, and an 11-hour operation.

Parallels with another poster on here.

Yes, it sounds as if his surgical team was superb. And I'm sure that was also the case with the team attending to LB.

It must be so easy to go the other way, and let the whole thing defeat you.

Fantastic news in both cases.

Great news.
I was dissapointed when he pulled out from playing Glastonbury. He said if he had a slight chance he had to take it and cancelled.
Hopefully his renewed health will see him playing next year.

He also said he'd be well enough to get back to playing soon. It'll be wonderful to see him again after thinking I'd seen him for the last time.

I do believe that you fight cancer mentally as well as physically. Don't ever give up. I'm fighting my own battle at the moment and although its difficult at times, the other scenario doesn't appeal.
Love hearing stories like Wilko's...good on him.

Good luck with it, Mo

A friend of mine is going for an op today to remove some liver tumours - the specialist is quite hopeful.

You hear a lot of positive stories like Wiko's these days, good luck to everyone fighting it

Wilko made his stage comeback last week when he played in a charity gig organised ny Roger Daltry. Considering what he's been through he looks great.
Can't wait for the comeback tour!!
