Wigan's players are to personally refund Latics fans who bought tickets at the DW Stadium for the 9-1 hammering at Tottenham on Sunday.

Wigan took a large following to White Hart Lane for the defeat, the second heaviest in Premier League history.

"We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday," said Wigan captain Mario Melchiot via the official club website.

"This is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their loyalty."

The club has confirmed that every supporter who bought a ticket from the DW Stadium for the game on Saturday should contact the ticket office and a full refund will be offered to them.

Refunds must be claimed on or before Friday 4th December 2009.

"The players have asked me not to release details of the amount [they will be repaying] but they wanted to make the gesture," Wigan's head of media and publications Ed Jones told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Maybe it would have been different if it was a home game," he admitted.

Could this catch on? :lolol:

problem is that we would never have any players as they would be paying money out to us every other week

Assuming there were 3,000 of them at £30 a pop - £90k should be easy to come up with between those that played.

I suspect that there may have been a few Spurs fans hidden away in there. A free match and watch your team win 9-1!

I doubt there would be many Spurs fans who went to Wigan to buy a ticket for a game at White Hart Lane!

Why? Lucky fans to have seen 10 goals in one game and five of them from one of the top strikers in the country. Since when did following your team away from home entitle you to a good result?

Blimey. I think I'm owed a few quid. Perhaps we could also get refunds for emotional stress or physical abuse (ooh er). I've been punched (once), kicked (once), spat at (twice) and had my sexuality called into question (over 200 times - ish) at away games. If anyone from the club reads this, just post the cheque - before Christmas would be great so I can get the little F's some nice presents!

Define large amount of away fans. Wigan don't have a huge fanbase.

Obviously I didn't go yesterday. Can one of our resident Spurs fans, who did go, confirm the Wigan attendance?

I bet this has started a massive BINFEST on the Wigan NSC.

"Its not fair, why don't I get a refund, just because I paid on the gate?"

etc, etc...
