Why we will NEVER have a top club

We will never have a top club here in Brighton - and the reason for that (and you'll probably disagree but that's what forums are for) is because our town is too nice!

We get the best weather in the entire mainland UK here and the town is thriving. Been to any other resorts recently? They've become run down, dismal and grey.

Everybody wants to live in Brighton & Hove - property prices reflect that.
And that's the problem. New people are forever moving into the area but they don't suddenly become Albion supporters. They still continue to support their Blackburns, Blackpools & Boltons and the only time they will visit Withdean is if their team is playing there.

It's been like this for years. I'm now 66 and have supported the Albion since my dad took me to my very first match at the age of 9. Of all my friends, I'm the only Brighton born - all the rest came from various places around Britain and even though some have lived here for 40 years, still support their home teams.

Without a large fan base there is simply not enough money coming into the club meaning that if they get the occasional good player, such as Gary Stevens or Bobby Zamora the club have to sell them to keep afloat. Without top players you can't get a top team.

Yes, I know we made it to the old 1st Division but every season was a struggle - not fighting relegation but getting the best out of the players we could afford. That works for a while but is impossible to sustain.

It's a catch 22 situation. The better a team is doing, the more people turn out to watch it - but they can't get better without those people going through those turnstiles - and without a good team no sugar daddy is going to fly over us in his helicopter and decide to buy us.

A thing worth remembering, and I'm sure it's been said here before, is when we were in the old 1st Division we didn't have one sell out for a league game - even against the mighty Man United or Arsenal. I seem to remember the only sell out was for a cup game against Liverpool.

If we couldn't fill the Goldstone against teams like that, what chance do we have against Yeovil or Hartlepool?

So we are just going to have to face up to facts. When I first started supporting the Albion 57 years ago they were in the old 3rd Division South - and we are STILL in the 3rd Division. Yes, it sounds great to be in "League 1" but we're kidding ourselves - it's really Division 3 - and that's where we will always be - it's our home, unfortunately.

There is some truth in what you say, but it goes further than that, in my view.

It will take years of high performance from the Blue and White stripes, but those that aren't currently interested, or those that have allegances elsewhere WILL start watching Brighton if we get into the Prem, but it needs to be sustained if the next generations are to catch the bug and start watching us. So I agree that it's hard to see us being a truly big club, but I disagree that we will never be one.

We will make the top flight again the only questions are how long will it take and how long can we stay there the next time.

Will it be within 20 years? I hope so.

Will we stay there more then the total of 4 seasons we spent there last time? I really hope so.

Its amazing that since Hull went up into the Prem just how many Hull shirts are being worn by people in Grimsby. Get into the Premiership and all the glory hunters will come out of the woodwork.

I know where your coming from and respect your post, but you only have to look at what Hull City have achieved to see what can be done with the right people at the helm in key positions,im not saying we have the right people doing the right jobs at brighton, but the club is at least trying to better itself, and not rolling over and quietly dying.

If we as a club had no ambition to progress and build a once again force to be reckond with team, the stadium everybody at the club has fought for would never have got passed the planning stage.

Building a new stadium is no guarantee of success but its a start and a way forward,i would hope we could emulate Hulls dramatic rise, but without also building a massive debt that ultimately almost killed our club.

I think it depends what you want really. I just want to potter along to the Albion and watch a half decent game of football in half decent surroundings... preferably winning more than we loose. Anything else is a bonus. I'd love us to get to the Premiership but for me it isnt the be all and end all. I sincerely hope the club are more ambitious than me though!

I can vouch for this statement being true. Their stickers on cars have all come off too!

I think the Premier league is a million miles away , I'd be happy to be a yo yo team between L1 and the championship much like WBA are in the premier league. I think when the new stadium is built this is an achievable goal and what we should aim for. From there you can build a foundation for bigger and better things. I think the town has no bearing on whether we could get to the promised land though. Look at Wigan , look at Wimbledon achieved for years. You don't have to tick all the box's to be succesful in this day and age.

Maybe one day good old fashioned hard work and talent might get you to the promised land like it used to. These days you might as well just sort the Premiership in order of income and dish out the prizes.

get lost you boring bastard, go and watch Arsenal or Chelsea. We will never be a top club. I don't care because this is my club. it was where I was born and the club back in the years of 1982 when we were at the Cup final and I was the only kid in the class interested in who we got in the semi-final draw. Ivan the first on the phone in take note.
There are too many fickle supporters who are demanding too much.

To be honest the Premiership should be achievable in 5 years after playing at Falmer as others have managed it with a new stadium - Hull and Reading to name two.

f*** OFF THIS FORUM

just resign yourself from being and Albion fan I will be quite happy if you do.

That's very unfair. The first post is very accurate and reflects the real position of the club. It's the way it's been for the best part of a century apart from about 4 seasons and prob the way it always will be unless the fanbase dramaticaly increases for some reason. There's nothing wrong with ambition but sometimes a good dose of realism is needed.

To the OP:

I respect your 57 yrs of supporting the Seagulls/Dolphins!

But I disagree with your statement that we will never have a top club (by that I'm assuming a Premiership position).

I truly believe we are at least on a path to sustained success with the building of a top class stadium and although we can never guarantee success will be forthcoming I do believe that the next chapter in our history will be positive and we will move forward and establish ourselves as a regular Championship club nearer the top than bottom. Obviously the current squad needs a massive overhaul to achieve that and I'm sure plans are in place!
