is Sven starting with Hargreaves ( according to BBC Sport ) ??

Why is he not giving Carrick a run out to see how he fairs in the side.

I just do not understand it.:nono:

Beacuse Carrick is better in that role IMO, still I haven't seen a lot of Hargreaves so cant really comment that much.

Looking forward to Hargreaves being given a chance - can't be a bad player if he's won the champions league and 3 or 4 german titles playing for Bayern - only reason people get on at him is they don't see him play week in week out - reckon he'll do well tonight.

Hargreaves is a good player, hes a superb man marker and holding midfielder. I hope he starts to show some of his Munich form soon thats all..

I think playing OH behind Lampard in a kind of 4-1-3-2 system is a good idea

OH deserves a start, and the formation may help neutralise the Swedish attack, which is their only real threat, and support the slackarsed arraticism of Rio Ferdinand, and walkabout tendancies of Ashley Cole

I agree. It sounds as if we're going to be playing a similar formation to the one Bayern play.

I like Carrick but Sven seems to have been put off by that awful game he had against Belarus.

Whay happens though if we stuff the Swedes 4 or 5 -0 does Sven keep this formation and give Sick note Gerrard the boot to the bench? Or revert to a system which clearly doesn't work to well?

I dont think it will make any difference if we tonk Swenden 8-0 and Hargreaves scores a Hattrick, Sven will still bring back Gerrard for Hargreaves.

hargreaves is good when he plays in his position. he is experienced and can score goals, and he is a Bayern München player for some time now. cant be bad, they only got quality...

i too think people dont like him, cos he doesnt play in the premiership. and of course, cos sven plays him out of position, and that's the only time when most people see hargreaves.

well said GS. I hope he has a good game to shut the sceptics up. It also gives us the option to switch things if we need to, succesfully, later on in the tournament

Very much so. It has ro be either Lampard or Gerrard alongside a holding midfielder.

I would actually love it if Hargreaves scores and runs to the England fans cupping his ear. Like him or loath him you dont boo him just for coming on the pitch.

Absolutely.

At LONG last, Sven is using Hargreaves properly, instead of bringing him on as some sort of utility player.

I'm looking forward to seeing him play - he must be a good player to play every week for Bayern Munich.

I also think it will release Lampard for those marauding runs forward that he does all the time for Chelsea, knowing that Makalele is holding the fort behind him.

Add this to Rooney charging around and Owen pulling the Swedish defence all over the place, and we will be OK

COME ON ENGLAND!

It's mad that we're still wondering what sort of a job he could do for us. This will be his 32nd cap and his 8th start. Not many other players get that amount of time to prove their worth. That said, I still think he's got a decent performance in him and hope, when played in his right position, he could be useful.

Owen Hargreaves is reknowned across Europe as one of the best holding midfielders in the world - just a pity some of these English, premiership pandering morons don't realise this.

A far better choice than Carrick who dosn't have champions league experience.

Combine this with Lampard - who although missed a few against T+T was at least running around getting in the right positions. where as Gerrard who i thought had been substituted so was his influence on the match up until the point he got lucky with a long range piledriver.

At least Hargreaves can tackle and play the simple ball unlike Carrick.
I actually think Lampard and Gerrard have looked ok together, the understanding is coming along finally. Instead of one playing deep and the other further forward Lampard plays just infront of Gerrard, this means Lampard is more likely to get into the box but also that Gerrard can push up and fire off a few long rangers. Also Lampards passing play is better in the finally third while Gerrard is a better long range passer. The biggest problem for me is the long ball tactics which tends to bypass the pair of them.

the other winning option we have ( IMHO) is to take Carragher off, drop the old boy back to right back ( Beckham) and bring on Lennon . .worked against T&T and I think it'd work against anyone, lennon runs, pulls defenders about, lays ball back and Beckham has time and space to whip in a killer cross for Owen to score
