Why so many women reporting on sport on the BBC?

All that, yes, and the fact he often calls it plain wrong "And it's a goal! It's in. No actually he's cleared it. Good chance, that"

And the fact he decides on his own pronunciation of players' names, and refuses to budge. Such as Olivier Giroud, which Motty insists ends 'RUDE', in contrast to the rest of the world, who use a silent D. Yesterday a case in point:

Motty: "Great penalty from GiRUDE"

Stadium announcer clearly audible in the background: "Arsenal's second, number 17, Olivier.."

60,000 Gooners: "GIROOOOOOOO"

Motty: "And that's GiRUDE's second of the game"....

This is obviously a common trait commentators develop at a certain age, I remember when Murray Walker inexplicably went from saying "Ayrton Senna" to calling him "EYEayrton Senna".

Motty also seems obsessed with coming up with some obscure stat. relating to the game, and then takes great delight in telling you this is Lampard's first goal in the 48th minute of a Premier League game, or some such irrelevant piece of information.

I laughed when I heard that too! It made me wonder who the sad man is behind the commentators. They must sit in a dark room all their lives!

I had recorded the Football League show and viewed it on Sunday, whats happened to MANish, the femail covering his job was a complete distraction, there are so many men they could have used who have had first hand experience of our game, fortunately after a few minutes i was able to zap her out.

John Motson has regressed really badly in the last 5-6 years, not that I thought he was the doyen of football commentators before that in any event. He also used to pronounce Didier Drogba as 'Drog-Bar'. Sounds like something Cadbury's manufacture.

What's Manish's first hand experience then?

Daily Mail brigade seem to have made this thread their home.

I thought Jacqui Oatley was a great improvement on Manish personally. You can tell she has a genuine interest in the game right down to the bottom tier. She did a decent job on that Late Kick Off programme last season as well when she took over from James Richardson in the South East region, having to put up with Mark 'not very' Bright for company most weeks. Fair play to her, couldn't have been nice for her to have her character assassinated in the media a few years back just because people didn't like her style of commentary. It's not like it was her decision to be put in the MOTD commentary box, an executive offered her the job, she could hardly turn it down.
