Why sell Virgo?

even if he loves the club, that is too good an opportunity to turn down

Then by definition he wouldn't 'die for the club' because that would be a lot worse than losing out on a big salary/Champions League football/playing in a nice stadium etc.

To be fair to Virgs, with those bastards who contributed to his dad's death still at large, it can't be nice walking round town knowing they're still at large (they are. aren't they?).

2-you cant keep a player from achieving his aspirations
3-its an amazing amount of money
4-we will spend it wisely
5-MM and DK did the right thing

I think this will cost the club in the long run - no question. Virgo had turned into a colossus of a player and was so so important to our promotion and staying up.

£1.5m is a lifeline to the club, sure, but he was the one player I didn't want to see go and this decision could cost us our place in the championship.

the thing is, if he didnt go he would regret it for the rest of his life - never knowing if he was good enough to play at that level, and collect all those obvious trophies he will pick up with celtic

that is a ridiculous attitude!

we have sold zamora, currie, cullip and harding for very good money.

this is a money pit- yes we need to pay of debtors but can we really afford to lose our most outstanding player?

we wont see any of this money spent on players (whose available?) and will really struggle now.

call me pessimistic but i find this a little hard to take.

Ok so if DK had said not then dont you think Virgs might have been a bit resentful at not being given a chance to play in Europe and in front of 60K people?

i wish it didn't have to be like this.

But hey I guess we have Archer, Belloti, Stanley, fecking NIMBys and countless other tossers to thank for this.

My thoughts exactly if we had a decent ground generating good revenues we would not have to be selling these players.

Virgo was good, very good, but not THAT good.

An inspirational player? Yes. A talented player? Yes. A player who could single-handedly keep us in/get us out of a division? No.

Bobby Zamora was that type of player. With no-one else really in the offing, Michel Kuipers is that sort of player.

Don't get me wrong, I love Virgs to bits as a player but £1.5 million really is too good to be true. £500k or even £750k and I would be feeling a bit down like a lot on here but £1.5 million.

Assuming we lost even £500k to Falmer costs, that still means McGhee could buy a decent player and still have a bit of cash in reserve to buy someone mid season if we were lacking a bit of something.

i agree but only IF we have a large part of that money to spend on new players.

No one player is ever to big for one club.

Annoying as he was talented but we can at least have a player budget - how times have changed.

I wouldn't say "cynically", but "practically" the club obviously knew that Virgo was a very saleable asset.

One that could not directly be replaced but whose loss could be worked around, leaving funds to reinforce other areas.

I'm absolutely gutted to see him go. An Albion hero. May not have spent many years here in his respect of his great fuure career, but a hero none the less.

Swindon and Ipswich - need I say more.

Great for his spirit and fight, but mostly for the fact that he played for the club he supported.

But a very good bit of business.

I think back to the Mghee interview in the Argus this year when he was "astonished" that no club had come in for Virgo.

A canny scot is ever there was one.

Mghee has effectively shown his worth for bringing the boy through and getting such a good deal.

virgo was our best player by MILES

He was our best player, yes, but was he our best defender? I say no. His value to our club this season was his work up front and his flexibility as a utility player given our small, weak squad - his defending could be very good (Spurs) or very bad (Cardiff, Watford, that horlicks of a goal he gifted Ipswich).

But now we have a better targetman than him in Kazza, I'm pretty relaxed about this transfer.

I'm not kidding, I would pick Butters in front of him as a central defender, and a fully fit Hinshelwood maybe as well.

You cannot turn down 1.5m for a player who is prone to injury when we play in a shit hole, need more players in the keeper position and midfiesld and have the coca cola kid to bang in the goals virgs got last year.

Good business DK, jus=t give MM some of the money!!!

Irrespective of arguments whether he wasn't the best defender, or CKR being a better target man, whats gutting is the fact that Virgo did the business for us, on more than one occasion, when it mattered.

I've got a good feeling about CKR though, has "arrogance" in all the right places.

How would i know?I'm pissed.
Let's face the facts........we desperately need more money than we can generate through gate receipts, so it is inevitable that some of our youngsters will be sold.
A big pat on the back to Martin Hinshelwood i say, for bringing these youngsters to the fore, and long may it continue.
If we didn't have these youngsters to sell, we really would be in the sh#t.
Well done Virgs, and good luck.
