The League Cup in all its forms has never been a crowd puller.Started to boost revenues in days when people worried that stadia were used sparingly,it was quickly seen by some clubs as a chance to to exercise the stiffs, and I vaguely recall that we had a match against Portsmouth in the very early years when Pompey sent their reserves for a LC match at the Goldstone. There was a bit of a hoohah, but Portsmouth won 5-1!
There were a few halcyon seasons in the late 60's,early 70's when the average attendances were 16-19,000,but most seasons have been lower, and some 10 seasons have averaged below 10,000.
So,if the Albion only attract 4,000 for a fairly unattractive fixture when supporters have other financial commitments (there's a cricket match on,I think, and a league fixture on Sunday) that's not too bad.Course,a win and a decent draw would be most welcome!
