Why is Falmer not part of 2018 World Cup Bid?

I do feel nicely butterly.

Yes, still on the cards, so if the red dog bid goes t*ts up we can be up and running pretty sharpish. The FA were not very forthcoming about why they sent it down the other end of Brian Clough Way...

Is the SOL to be expanded? It's pretty big as it is....

Niall Quinn said we might extend to 55,000 if we win the bid but I think it's highly unlikely. The current capacity is just under 49,000 and we'll probably only sell out for the manu and Newcastle matches this season. There were 10,000 empty seats for our opening match this season, against Birmingham; though 38,000 is still a decent crowd. Sunderland is a poor town, and an ageing one.

There's an obvious team to use Falmer as a base for world cup if it was tomorrow and didn't have 2 of 3 group games in the NE....... Uruguay would be flair. By the time tournament comes around though would Gus have anything to do with us?

The reason is: We had to submit an application for Falmer to be used and that application had to be accepted last year before the final 12 were chosen.

As part of that application we had to show an FA representative round the ground and explain the oppurtunities for improvement and development to be considered.

But unfortunately we didn't even have an East stand at this point

I'm surprised Elland Road made the list, it's a dump within a dump. Much prefer Hillsborough (which still isn;t up to it these days).

Some of us are old enough to remember Villa Park being upgraded for the 1966 World Cup.

They attached wooden benches to the terraces to turn it into an "all-seater" stadium. If I remember rightly, people just stood on the benches.

The land of chocolate
bristol has been turned down by somerset council i think.

Not quite correct. The stadium itself has been approved. The application for a supermarket on the Ashton Gate site has been turned down. Whether this derails the whole project remains to be seen. I'd imagine Sainsbury's will just submit a slightly smaller application which might have more chance of pleasing the council.

I currently live in Ashton Gate, there is zero need for any sort of new supermarket there in my opinion. The planners they are hiring just need to be a bit more imaginative about the land and come up with some mixed use development scheme.

If only Hove Council had been so difficult.

I also lived in Plymouth for 3 years (I get around!) and I don't know what a club like Argyle in a city like Plymouth are going to do with a 40k stadium. MK more so, although it would be less hassle for them to upgrade their soulless bowl of a stadium.

Why did Southampton not bid?
