[Albion] Why is Dunk consistently overlooked by England?

Its hard to argue too much with Mings as he is a left footed centre half I believe, none of the others are that gives him a little edge I guess, And Tomori no problem being a young lad playing great at Chelsea.

But as you say, Stones hasn't kicked a ball in a while and Dunk is in superb form.

It’s very easy to argue with Mings - he just isn’t good enough and has done nothing to prove he deserves a place in the England squad.

He has been a premier league regular for just three months and in that time, hasn’t actually played very well making a number of high profile errors that have led to goals. Add in the fact he has been a centre back for less than a year, his elevation to an England squad regular is mystifying. Stones and Gomez are more deserving of places as they’ve both proven themselves in the past and yet they’re incredibly lucky to be there. Just being left footed shouldn’t be enough, all of the other centre backs can play that side.

I wouldn't be so outraged IF GS hadn't spilled so much rhetoric in early days (in my mind anyway) that he would pick players on form, not reputation, or could provide him with the ability/merits that allowed his team to play a certain way. I just can't see how Stones, given his form, the fact that he is a back-up rather than a mainstay with his club, and has made some horrible errors in recent appearances for England is the obvious one for Kean (who I just don't believe is better than Dunk in the 1st place). The seduction of the big club context appears alive and well - and I do include Villa in that. Even Gary Cahill has made a great start to the season, but arguably very unlikely to play for England whilst at Palace. I can see that Dunk is not a shoe-in, although he must be a strong contender who is unlikely to be selected until he signs for Arsenal or Spurs.

Unbelievable.

I hope he schools Utd while our front 3 make Maguire look like the player he actually is - shitehouse.

Gomez - talented, but rarely starts PL matches.
Mings - continued flavour of the month for GS, he was never going to be dropped after his brave & eloquent stand against racists. But he’s still error prone, Villa fans still go on about this.
Stones - injury prone, always a big error in his game, Guardiola avoids him unless as a last resort.

Dunk - in the form of his life against an array of PL opponents, he can play as well.

Pathetic by Southgate on this.

Palace bias or clueless buffoon?

Lord forbid we lose Dunk in the window to one of the alleged top 6 suitors, but if we did get that 50m+ offer and Bloom let him go to somewhere like Arsenal, his game wouldn't radically improve from the level it is today, in fact you could argue he'd have less to do with a better midfield in front of him...... But if he was playing for the likes of Arsenal rather than Brighton in the latter half of the season, what odds on the same Dunk performing to the same level, then starts getting the recognition his performances deserve today because he wears a bigger clubs shirt?

Tomori or Mings ahead of Dunk just shows how poor Southgates judgement is, especially when England have major defensive issues.

GS obviously doesn't rate Lewis very highly but I am surprised he sticks with Rice who has shown he isn't good enough for England and there are better midfielders available..

An England manager sticking with out of form favourites, hardly original.

I'd say he'd be a definite member of the England squad, and possibly a starter, just for the change of club.

That isn't really what is happening here though. Its not as if the squad is full of people like Dier, Cahill and Wellbeck, who need moving on.

Southgate is DESPERATE to be seen as progressive. So much so that age seems to be the number one consideration in almost all of his picks - certainly for all his outliers / new picks.

The younger the player is, the better their chances. If they are young AND played for Southgate within the age-groups then they are a shoo-in.

Thus Tomori who has played half a dozen PL games, and not been great, is in - all based on how good he could become, rather than what he has achieved to date, or the current level of his performances.

As the situation with Grealish shows - he may be a prize cockwomble, but he is a talented player, and definitely worth a call up.

Dunk really got screwed by the under 21's.

Mings is just 18 months younger but has 2+ years and 50+ Premier League appearances.

I really hope this pisses off and inspires Dunk for Sunday. A top performance there will be noticed by the media given who we are playing. They might then start asking questions of Mr Waistcoat of Palace.

Grealish looks as good as any England midfielder I’ve seen this season too. I guess he hasn’t been picked because he’s still injured? If not Southgate is even more clueless than I thought.

Am I the only one who thinks this is not a bad thing?

Yes it's a shame for Dunk, but for us its a positive. He will now get a break and doesn't risk getting injured playing pointless internationals.

Whilst I agree it’s not a bad thing for us right now, as well as being gutted for Dunk as he truly deserves it, I hope it does not lead him and other young England players to think they won’t be considered if they’re playing for Brighton.

It is a fair point. Fortunately Southgate won't be there forever.

Other International managers seemingly are less 'choosy' about the clubs they are prepared to scout their players from. The Albion's form this season, and their respective contributions to it, has seen Trossard, Connolly and Alzate all receive full international call ups (along with the well-established likes of Pröpper, Duffy, Bong, Ryan and Mooy)

You keep saying his Palace but he was born in Watford and played more games for both Aston Villa and Boro...Palace fans never really regard him as "one of their own"

As for Dunk, He is 28 this month, young for a center back , but it does seem that Southgate does go for younger players in general.

Agree. Whilst I would love him to play if he wants it really is a plus to us that he doesn't.

Southgate is taking an outright punt with Mings and Tomori, passing over a proven Premier League defender like Dunk - captain of his club side, exceptional passing range, goal threat at set pieces, 82 Prem matches under his belt, 4 clean sheets already this season and at his peak at 27.

If you haven't played for the Under 21s you can forget it. Any nations Under 21s will do (see Declan Rice).
