Jack, I agree with other posters about it probably being too low. But, also....keep the faith..... you may just be being too impatient! Cautious blighters, birds. We've had a nesting box up for nearly 10 years; studiously ignored by anything feathered. This year, for the first time ever, blue tits nested in it. Maybe they just needed to time to reassure themselves its a good & safe place. We've also been far more regular about keeping the bird feeders topped up recently; and I wonder whether that also helped persuade 'em to nest there this year too.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I know a lovely garden you could put them in :D[/QUOTE
Where on earth could this be!
Perhaps this is where they may end up, provided you don't paint them claret and blue!!

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Bloody sparrows won't touch my bird feeders either - although a couple of large cats at the foot of the tree with their mouths open waiting for a free takeaway probably doesn't encourage them.

I put up two nesting boxes on my fence in January, expecting tits or other small bird species to take a fancy to these luxury detached residences and move in for a while.
I'm very disappointed that I've had no takers. There's been a couple of viewings but that's about it.
Am I likely to see any ornithological small beauties in the future, or have I wasted my time?
It's a pleasant residential area, close to the sea and all other amenities.
Ungrateful feathered ****ers!

Tempt them with Niger seed they love the stuff, guarantee you'll have so many tits in your garden you won't whether you're coming or going

Hang a couple of bras up in the garden, and wait for the tits! Or otherwise , leave your kebab leftovers , and wait for the seagulls!

Tits aren't very fond of the sea air. You always see more of them inland. Just saying.

Trouble with Niger seed is that it is so small you need to use Niger feeders and only these have small enough beaks to use them 520-goldfinch.jpg

I find that the tits tend to go for my fatballs or peanuts. Going for tits and getting finches can be a great disappointment !

Please all put up different bird boxs for sparrows & starlings etc as they are endangered now. we have lots of tits. I made and put up a sparrow nest box on my house this spring.( 3 box's together as they like to nest in a colony) & guess what, we had blue tits successfully raise their chicks in the centre box.

What ??? I'd do anything to get Goldfinches in my garden...absolutely beautiful birds. Just have Greenfinches and a pair of chaffinches at the moment, equally nice so grown lots of teasel for the goldies.

I get loads of them on Niger feeders, just up from Withdean Stadium (although the feeders were up for a year before they started coming). How long have you been growing the teasel ?

And i had greenfinches and chaffinches first, it seems to take longer to attract the goldfinches.

we had a nesting box in the garden the whole 8 years we were in Wales and it was not until the last year the blue tits nested in there (it then promptly fell to bits) a new one installed just before we left.
we have put one in the front garden here(nothing in the back one as thats the cats territory) and as of yet nothing, we have nearly all ground feeders here, so the peanuts in the feeder have to be put on the ground otherwise they would just sit in there uneaten.
the only problem with ground feeding is that it encourages mice (the field type) who hoover up all the remains, its just a good thing the cats cannot get out the front otherwise those mice would most certainly be toast.

Put sun flower seeds in your feeders and you will attract Goldfinch ,Greenfinches, all sorts of tits and Siskin, and possible Nuthatch.
Depending on your location I even had woodpeckers visit my feeders and even had pheasant feeding of the ground. Also we have had sparrow hawks having a feed that's nature.

This year has been really good for variety. I regularly get woodpeckers (both types either on the lawn or sunflower feeders), I also had my first sparrowhawk sitting on top of the feeders about a month ago, but my highlight is still getting a few of these on my fatballs

I've had feeders in the garden for about 5 years and seem to get more birds (and variety) year on year.
