Why have Albion never produced a decent striker from the youth ranks?

Ah yes, another local boy ...... from Rhodesia! To be fair though, he did come over here and sign for us at 16, so we can rightly call him a youth product. Hardly really a forward, though (one goal per 900 minutes). Strange international qualification, though - Scottish father, Rhodesian mother, played his football in England ....... and played for .....

Wales!

Yes very strange how he played for Wales but he was a winger who got 30 caps for them.

Has Tilley been prolific at youth level? Can't say I've been paying that much attention. I do realise that not all the top players are necessarily scoring 30 goals per season in the youth ranks anyway, and that some who do, never make it anyway. Paul Moulden springs to mind- think he was in the Guinness Book of Records at one stage after scoring something like 200 goals in a season for his local youth side. Turned pro- including a few loan appearances for us, I believe- but never struck gold and eventually drifted out of the game.

Noticed the other day that two Chelsea youngsters- Dom Solanke and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have both hit over 40 goals this season for their DS. I suppose they do get to pick from the cream of the crop, but that's still good going by anyone's standards. Rumour has it they already pay Solanke £20k per week & he's not played a single first team game yet

Funny enough i have just read Paul Lake's autobiography and he was in the same youth team as Paul Moulden and he mentions how fantastic he was in front of goal.He mentioned about him getting something like 290 goals in a season!
Barry Lloyd could pull the odd gem out the bag and i think he got Moulden and Cotterill on loan but as was the norm at the time we couldn't stump up the money and off they went.

Too often on this board, people throw out wild accusations. They suggest such and such is the worst. That we have never done this or that.

I think Edna deserves praise for researching this topic, checking if there were any, before trying to work out why there are not. https://nortr3nixy.nimpr.uk/showt...system-every-produced-a-really-decent-striker

Bravo, Edna :salute:

There is currently a 17yo local lad leading the attack of an Isthmian League Div 1 side. Last season they came 6th.

I wonder why he hasn't been snapped up at some time.

Currently on trial at Bournemouth, could be snapped up by them instead :(

I remember seeing Tony Towner's debut. I think it was in that match another young forward also made his debut - Mick Conway - who looked at first sight pretty good. I wonder what happened to him?

Mick Conway went to Cottesmore/Cardinal Newman and was the best player I ever had the pleasure of being in the same team with. He was on the Albion books, played a few times, went to Swansea but I think had a bad car accident. When I see professional players I think of Mick Conway and remind myself that players who make it in the professional game are on a different level to us spectators.

He was a really genuine, nice guy, very good looking, incredibly talented sportsman.

It's reading threads like this that depress the hell out of me. It's not that we don't seem to have produced a decent striker through our youth ranks (though it is that too, of course). No, it's because this sort of thread makes me realise how little I know about players who aren't/haven't been in our first team squad. I'm a lightweight. :nono:

Doesn't stop me from professing an opinion about all manner of things football, of course. But that's my right - it comes with buying a ticket.
