[Albion] Why has Shane Duffy's return gone so well?

Maybe I should have put "adapted" in bold for you. Potter has seen the challenge faced through the absence of BDB and Veltman and adapted what he's got with Dunk, Webster and Duffy and lo and behold it's working quite well. Good management imo and yes maybe some luck but odd view to shout out it's only luck.

What World Cup was it that Beardsley was suddenly paired with Lineker and "bang" the team suddenly started playing really well? (note - I can't remember if this is fact or just my warped memory before someone lays an egg about it). Luck or good judgement by the manager or a bit of both? (he had to pair them together though).

In 86 we lost to Portugal and drew with Morocco needing a win in the last game agains Poland else it was curtains. Mark Hateley - journeyman Pompey donkey amongst other teams - was dropped for Beardsley and the rest is history. Well, Maradona's goals were anyway.

I agree with your general point though. When you get a chance, you need to take them and Duffy certainly has. Duffy has succeeded due to a combination of things. Environment, opposition, Injuries, good management and his charactor (not forgetting playing alongside Dunk and Webster with Bissouma shieding him who could all easily be playing CL football). It's almost like we are one of the best run clubs in the country.

I'm happy he is back as I can again back him as £10.00 anytime scorer and know over a season he will give me a profit.
He was 6/1 last Saturday [emoji106][emoji108]

As long as he scored in 7 games.

Hope you do make a profit

I think it's quite possible that Duffy could play in a three with Veltman at RWB.

Against Getafe we experimented with Veltman in the White role and Mwepu at RWB and it was an unmitigated disaster. They ripped us to bits down our right and scored a soft headed goal. Duffy only got a few minutes.

Then not having JV available forced Potter into a rethink that has worked out nicely. Yes, against Burnley, where you need a Duffy, and Watford who look poor, but we still executed really, really well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, having two binary camps in the fans with regards to the coach is self destructive. Now we already have people on this thread who won't recognise that Duffy was the only option left, rather than a brilliant draft by Potter, but equally people who won't recognise how well he played the cards he was dealt, to get two results we wouldn't have got last season.

You've got to be free to both criticise and praise where due.

Yeah, all good points. I was thinking Veltman ahead of Duffy assuming that Lamptey was fit to play RWB. I've realised my error...

He adds a physical presence and experience that White couldn't offer. It has immediately plugged a massive flaw in our defensive line from last season. Defending set pieces. His return should tighten that up and reduce goals against. Shane will bang in a few at the other end as well. Ben White is an outstanding player and will be regular international in the future (if Arsenal don't wreck him) but I reckon we've gained £50m and resolved some flaws from last season

Deffo.

That said though GPott's gonna find himself in a damned if I do, damned if I don't situation.

Duffy shouldn't play every game, he's too one dimensional.

But you know full well he'll either play a game he shouldn't, or miss a game where he ends up leaving a mahooosive hole.,

A great start l'll readily admit but let's wait until we are a dozen games into the season shall we, before we start saying that we have rectified faults from last season, only two have been played so far, and let's face it, we are going to face far greater threats than Burnley and Watford.

I suspect it has a lot to do with his desire to prove himself combined with the fact we played two teams that suited his combative style, I for one have been pleased for him and he certainly looked pleased to be back Saturday

I didn't expect Duffy to come back (other than briefly, prior to being loaned or sold) - and TBH I didn't want him to. However much it was down to chance (i.e. injurues/pings to other CBs) that he got to play at Burnley, you have to say that the shirt is now his to lose. The Webster-Duffy-Dunk combination just seemed to click, and Webster looked even better playing on the right side.
Happy days!

to me a combination of you make your won luck - Duffy clearly made sure he was in pole position to come into team if needed re attitude and fitness

plus GP won't I suspect have been an innocent bystander in the whole process either; he may just now know how to get the best out of Duffy

as is quoted in Athletic article on Connolly today - players are paid to be ready to play - not paid to be automatic picks every week

Anyone got the lastest on Big Shane?

Can't remember anything mentioned in the Chelsea presser. I thought he was due to be back a couple of weeks ago.

He'll face a battle to get back into the team now l think with everyone performing so well, Dunky should be fit for the Leicester game, and it will take a brave man to drop Dan Burn from the side at the moment.

Miss a game through injury or suspension, and your place could be in doubt. A great position for the club to be in really. :)

Is Shane injured at the moment or does GP just not fancy using him? Seems to be in and out of the squad recently.

Been in the team or on the bench up until the last match, when Webster was deemed fit enough to come back (on to the bench at least).

I don't think we'll be seeing any more of him in the stripes.

One of my favourite ever players to watch, so I take no pleasure at all in saying that
