When you see an advert on the telly for Strepsils and it finishes with the cheery line 'Follow us on Facebook!' you just KNOW thats one social networking site that has run its course. Oh well.

Anybody seen an even rubbisher product to 'follow' on Facebook?

Facebook will become a public company at some point in 2012, making it one of the biggest on EARTH. Its one of the most used and most influential websites EVER. Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest people in the world. But if you think it's rubbish then I suppose you know best.

Yada yada. Huge numbers of people will rebel and go off and establish a new social networking site not utterly compromised by shite advertising by dullard commercial enterprises. Or as a bare minimum will find a way of blocking that advertising.

Facebook is taking more and more liberties. One I hate at the moment - when you 'read' a newspaper article it tells everyone what you've read (same if you listen to any music on Spotify). Why the hell would you want people to know what articles you are reading or what music you are listening to? Even worse, if you read an article it always appears as your top entry on other people's pages, even like a week later. Yes, you can remove it from your profile but it's bloody irritating to say the least. The targetted ads also annoy the hell out of me. The more they take the p*ss, the more likely it is that someone will come along and blow them out of the water. I hope so.

Disagree with that - I think the very success of facebook is that it has attracted people who wouldn't usually make much use of online fads, or even the internet at all; I can't see all these people disappearing to a more exciting/practical social networking platform. Not quickly anyway.

Is there something similar for FF? I care less for Google/Chrome than FB becoming more of a behemoth.

Facebook is fine for now but people will get bored and move on. Anyone here remember MySpace and more to the point does anyone use it any more?

Or Friendsreunited...

If I owned Facebook I would sell it now as has been stated people get bored of these type of things after a while.

What stuff does it sell? What does it offer? It doesn't even really exist, it is just a bit of electricity.

Whatever. The fact that it is viewed by hundreds of millions of people on a daily basis is in itself worth millions to advertisers.

They said that about myspace, friendsreunited (as mentioned by Kevo), yahoo, AOL and thousands of other sites and companies. Anyone who pays serious money for an internet site, other than a porn one, is throwing their money down the drain quite frankly.

yep, millions of users which could swan off to another platform. like they left friends reunited and myspace before. the advertising click through rate for facebook is 0.04% compared to 8% for Google. 200 time more! most thier reveune comes from games, which could switch platforms. they can flogg the advertising but as we've seen with the "Geoff likes Coke" fiasco, people arent keen on their approach. THPP point is very valid, the brand has saturated everything. going public is an exit strategy for the current investors - or tell me why a company making a $1b on $4.2 revenues needs to raise capital?

what will be most interesting is how the timeline interface is recieved, the service relies 100% on the interface and if users dont like it they will simply stop using even if there isnt an alternative. it could be the biggest commercial suicide in history.

Once business moves in, the people move out. Its interesting that the current biggest growing demographic on FB is middle aged women; once their kids realise this, FB will suddenly become very uncool for the kids, then their mums will lose interest.

Facebook has already reached its prime - the only way is down.
