Apparently it's nothing to do with Geography. Rubbish. It's everything to do with Geography.

Palace fans are predominately based in or south of Croydon as north you move into catchment area of other London clubs.
Brighton fans are obviously based in or north of Brighton as south you are in the sea!

There is a huge area in Sussex and Surrey where the 2 clubs clash

It's clear that the rival was born out of other reasons though, which to be fair not many neutrals will be aware of. And while Palace are Brighton's local team, an outsider could be forgiven for assuming that Palace's main rivals would be one of the closer London clubs.

Look at the Geography from a Palace point of view. There are so many more clubs closer to them than us! They could hate any one of them. Arsenal , Spurs, Chelsea, Fulham, Brentford, QPR, Millwall, West Ham, Charlton, Watford, Barnet, Gillingham

1976 Terry Venables, Alan Mullery, £5 note incident, plenty of games between the two as well as players who played for both sides. Nuff said really.

My cricket daft nan told me that the Sussex and Surrey rivalry started in that sport, amongst the two oldest cricketing counties, certainly well before it happened in football. It split families in two, including ours, she was born in Surrey and followed their fortunes whilst her dad was Sussex through and through.

Doesn't have the same bite as a real local derby in my opinion. Neighbouring towns or joint city clubs do.
