Why does everyone hate Country music?

How many Brits do YOU see wearing bowler hats, and what would you think of their appearance??

I just knew someone would go further into genre pigeonholing. Defining The Eagles, they are modern country, and MUCH more so than the Byrds! Eight Miles High, Feel a Whole Lot Better, So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star, Bells of Rhymney....and all those Dylan covers?? What by them actually IS 'country'?
Poco are another country band who are called 'country rock' because they play electric instruments, Dwight Yoakim, Chris Isaak, The Outlaws, New Riders of Purple Sage, etc.
If you look hard enough, you will find country in many places. 'Not A Second Time' by the Beatles? Imagine it sung by The Mavericks, and then maybe The Beatles singing 'Oh What a Thrill' with their moptops jumping to the MerseyBeats.

Well, whaddayaknow pardners, I done found a vid of tham Mavricks pickin some Merseybeat; (it's awful, be warned)

Speaking from personal experience you won't find too many truckers listening to the Eagles and their ilk. Truckers are the perfect example of true Country fans and it's no wonder so many of them end up driving bridges

Having been forced to listen to Country in it's homeland I can tell you that most Country purists don't consider Shania Twayne Country at all and that's bearing in mind that up until her last CD the mixes there were quite different to the Pop versions we had here. Additionally there was outrage when Garth Brooks adopted his alter ego Chris Gaines as how dare a Country stallwart dare play that commie, pinko, fag rock music ? I can tell you that the Mid West has a very different take on what and what is not Country and The Eagles and other purveyers of Country Rock most certainly aren't. Mind you according to the man himself neither was Johnny Cash even though he was a regular performer at the Grand Old Oprey.

It's at this point that I guess I should confess my liking of Garth Brooks. Am not really into much other country stuff although that's probably through ignorance rather than choice.

There's country music and then there's country music.

I love bluegrass, Hayseed Dixies, Lambchop, Michelle Shocked, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams III, etc etc

Don't label it all under the Garth Brooks banner.

Try Sweetheart of the Rodeo, much more a Gram Parsons country album than a Byrds jangle-rock record.

Yes, which I had thought about. Probably the most country about the Byrds, was this one member of the group. That he hooked up with Emmylou Harris even added more weight to the country connection.
Flying Burrito Brothers had a 'Southern' sound, with banjo-strings and fiddles flying, and Buffalo Springfield were more country-fied than The Byrds to my ears. When various members came together for CSNY, with Graham Nash out of the Hollies the British beat connection was there too.

Gene Clark of The Byrds made a notable LP in 'No Other'. This Mortal Coil did a version of 'Strength of Strings' from that LP. There are a couple of country tunes on it too, notably 'Silver Fountain'. It's a rock classic though, just happens to have some country on it.

It's also the nature of appreciation we all have for their indigenous music roots. No more would an Tennessee man get ska than an Andalucian get Scottish folk or an Englishman get deep south country. It's all about the level to which we all appreciate other people's culture.

To that end, I don't really like country because I haven't been divorced seven times, nor do I have a gal waiting at the other end of the railroad track, nor do I have a problem with my mule...

:lolol:

..... what kind o' mule d'ya got thar Large One, is it a Mustang, or a VW?
D'ya recommend a good mulechanic?

It has got to be the artistes stupid names.

Its all "Billy Ray" and "Hank" or "Randy" or "Jim Bob" or somesuch.

Actually some of it aint bad, but when its Cheesy...Its cheesy!

Can't lump it all together though, thats like saying Bon-Jovi are a Heavy Metal Band the same as Motorhead.

Anyone who saw the documentary the wrong-eyed jesus by country singer Jim White can't help but be moved by the beauty of raw country music out there in the american sticks. I recommend his album of the same name too. So I think you're wrong there TLO.

Also, if you like your country more folky then you could do worse than Bonnie Prince Billy. That man is fantastic.

It's worth noting that the root of American Country actually does reside in Irish Folk and trad music, hence the fiddle thang in country. I imagine the Spanish and French also left some influence with the squeeze-box accordian and lap-style guitar too.

The negro slaves took to it as well, but found a harmonica easier to get than an accordian. They blended Irish trad, Southern country, slave chants and spirituals, and came up with The Blues.

If I imagine fiddle music played on brass instruments, I'd also have to think that Jazz has some roots in shit-kickin' banjo-bashing country as well.
Think upbeat barn-dance country, with fiddles and banjos - then put a piano there instead and a plunger on that trumpet, and Duke Ellington lives!

Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, Gary Allan, Charley Pride, George Strait, NGDB, Diamond Rio, Keith Whitley, Eagles, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Alabama, Dusty Drake, Steve Wariner, Collin Raye, Trent Tomlinson, Eric Church, Steve Azar, Billy Currington, Lonestar, Reba McEntire, B&D, Montgomery Gentry, Sawyer Brown.

I like a little bit of country, to say the least. :)

I'm going to see Chesney in concert later this year, which should be good.

I think most people associate Country Music with weird little sects in Crawley that dress up in Rebel Gear and salute the Yankee flag or whatever. Or the docile sheep that go to the big Wembley thing. The audience just look like like they've had all the stuffing knocked out of them. Or maybe had a mass lobotomy. No offence.

Country Music is obviously best heard in context, in cowboy country, where it no doubt goes down a storm, and you could probably learn to love the finer points. But here it just goes down like a lead balloon. Got a soft spot for that Shania Twain mind. Tho not THAT soft...

And still no mention of the great John Prine-nor, Lucinda Williams, Clint Black and so many more. I used to dislike country because it was expected of me....then I listened to some and realised that there is a lot of good stuff hidden under the country banner that I would have missed.

Clint Black's not bad, but I just always saw him as the kind of guy who does what Jackson and Strait do, only not quite so well.

Give us a couple of Youtube links of their finer moments then. Seize the moment! Turn us ON!
