[Albion] Why do we loan and not sell the out of favour players?

That’s not the case though is it as West Ham and West Brom were interested in buying Duffy but we chose to loan to Celtic as that was Shane’s preferred destination.

Also can’t believe given the competition when we signed that nobody would have been interested in Andone and Ali J (albeit at reduced sales values)

Andone especially,. came to us for very little money, undislosed but reported to be around the £5m mark, subsequently neither he nor Ali J exactly set the Premier League alight, so no surprise at all that neither player attracted any real interest when it came to a permanent move.

Thankfully for me in the case of Andone, as even now, providing he can get over his lengthy injury, l think he can still have something to offer us.

Normally when a player is sold before the end of their current contract, the buying club will have to pay a transfer fee to the selling club, an agents fee and a player signing on bonus. The player will also want to match or better their current wages.

According to spotrac.com, the annual basic salaries (before) bonuses of the following players are:

Jahanbakhsh £2.6m
Izquierdo £2.34m
Andone £2.08m
Locadia £2.34m
Duffy £2.08m
Ryan £1.82m

In the current climate, we should be grateful Dan Ashworth has managed to get most of these annual salaries off our books when few if any clubs want to splash out on transfer fees etc. for players who are struggling and cannot regularly get into a team near the bottom of the Premier League.

Selling an unwanted player is a very difficult task.

The reason a player is unwanted is typically because they haven't performed, so there likely won't be a host of clubs lining up to buy them. Even if a club was willing to buy them, they wouldn't pay anything near what we paid for the player and if they know we are trying to offload, then they will lowball the offer.

Then, there's the wages issue. The Premier League is one of the best paying leagues in the world. Other leagues in Europe don't pay anything like what the PL does. Therefore, if a player is earning good money at Brighton, they wouldn't want to move to another league and take a big pay cut.

To exacerbate the above problems, Covid is having a huge impact on club finances across Europe. Clubs are really struggling financially (even the likes of real Madrid and Barcelona are in crisis) and they don't have the means to buy players and hand out big contracts.

Therefore, unless we want to write off a big loss on the transfer fee and continue to pay a portion of the players wages after they leave us, we have to loan them.

There are some benefits to a loan. Firstly, we can get some money from it. Usually there will be a loan fee and the borrowing club will pay a % of the players wages. There can also be bonuses based on appearances, goals, league position etc. Also, it puts the player in the shop window. If the player performs well during the loan, it's likely that the borrowing club or another club will be willing to purchase the player and we would likely recoup a larger portion of the original transfer fee. It's also possible that the player performs well enough on the loan that we integrate him back into the 1st team at Brighton after the conclusion of the loan.

Unfortunately, the players we have loaned out haven't had successful loan spells (Andone, Locadia, Duffy) and we'll be stuck with them once again after their loans end/ended.

Most of those salaries off the payroll? If only!

Jahanbakhsh, Izquierdo and Andone are getting their full whack, and we are certain to be paying a percentage of the other three's salaries too.
