They're no good as leftovers, unlike much of the other Christmas fayre... so people hold on to them instead of eating them on Boxing Day.

It's because you are no longer allowed to kill dogs and put it in your wheelie bin or luzz it into your neighbours back garden.
People are a lot kinder these days so they don't do a Fred West or put them in a sack and chuck it in the sea.
So you get stuck with an animal that sits I front of the fire and licks its backside.

Your guess is correct.
I can honestly say that I have never let a dog lick my backside. Mrs Chopper is the jealous type.
But I will admit to getting a tingle when a dog humps my leg.

Pure bred = spectacularly inbred.
