So your argument is because other clubs have made mistakes with striker signings, we should never sign anyone!? [emoji1782]

Of course not.If the right player is available at the right price,we should sign him.

We have made mistakes with striker signings. Locadia and Andone were not exactly raging successes either!!

Maupay will score more goals than Watkins this season.

You are a bore

The biggest question for me isn’t the chequebook, it’s are we playing a style that suits the strikers we have. Welbeck and Connolly both want the ball into space behind the defence. I guess that’s why we’re better away, punishing teams like Leeds, Newcastle and Villa who take the game to us. It’s much harder at home where most teams seem to sit deep and attack us on the break unless we score the first goal, but we’ve too often conceded when that’s happened.

I really don’t know what the solution is. A bigger target man in the Murray/Ulloa mould would be an excellent plan B but they’re just so hard to find. Would be bloody great if we could get one at the right price.

Because players are not coached very well in being clinical ? No killer instinct ?

I don't believe the players aren't capable. We've seen on several occasions that they are. I do think some of them have hit a ceiling though. If we want to move up a rung on the PL ladder we need to keep evolving the squad, obviously.

I think all our forwards are technically deficient and have not got any other attributes to compensate, e.g. awareness, football intelligence. pace, instinct.

Yes. I was stupidly asked did I watch training . Like this was possible in the middle of a pandemic!

No, you suggested we weren’t focusing enough on finishing in training, clear evidence even as you suggest

I asked how you knew the breakdown of our training sessions and suggested you must go regularly to know this.

Of course you don’t go as you don’t have any business being there and even if you did you wouldn’t be allowed currently, so in turn this proves that you don’t know what we focus on in training.

You could spend an extra 3 hours a day shooting, doesn’t mean this translates into success in a real game scenario.

Personally I don’t think it’s the finishing that’s the issue its the lack of movement and speed in getting into decent positions and making the right decision when to shoot first time, angles etc. Do they work on this, how would I know?

You joke but I would be ecstatic if we signed Ibra.

However I think we have a less than 1% chance unless we’re suddenly willing to pay a few 100k a week.

I'd also be quite satisifed with signing a player who scored 560 goals and made 150+ assists so far in his career. But as you say, slim chances. Also a very weird personality clash with GP.

Absolutely, he was. Did allot of work and worked well with The Goldstone Gaz. But clinical finisher he wasn't. Like Maupay you wouldn't be entirely surprised if he missed a sitter. I know I'm coming over as I don't mean to. I don't think Maupay is too bad, he's a good player, but his finishing just doesn't cut it and he should have scored many more goals with the chances that this midfield has created. I then just think they have to face it and see what they can do about it. I'm really surprised many think it's ok. There you go, you pays your money you takes your choice.

Maybe not clinical, but certainly brave. And he was top scorer in that promotion season ahead of Nelson.

As it happens, I agree that Maupay isn't a good finisher, but he seems to be the one that Potter has most faith in. I'd argue that the most natural goalscorer on our books is Andone, but whether we ever see him in an Albion shirt again seems open to question.

Haller, Samatta, Werner, Brewster and Rodrigo all very recent examples of players in the bracket that you are talking about or more who have done **** all. Watkins, (who wanted Villa anyway because of the Dean Smith connection), is the only name you seem to have come up with. Wilson is on £100k a week, way beyond our wage structure.

Who are these realistic examples who’ve worked? Who have we missed out on or who should we go get?

I've been thinking about this. United have bought Cavani, but home grown Rashford seems to be the main man. Leicester have Vardy for no real fee, Ditto spurs and Kane, Everton and DCL. City haven't really bought a front man since Aguero and Dzeko. Chelsea spent big, but are relying on TA and Giroud who they wanted to offload. Auba has been a relative success at Arsenal. But there are really aren't that many examples of spending big and getting goals.

Exactly. And as others have pointed, plenty of examples of spending big and not getting goals: Haller, Werner, Brewster. Definitely do not sign a forward with name ending ‘er’.

Probably. From what I've see though psychology is a big part of Potter's style. Maybe they need that "inner chimp" bloke to come in :lolol:

GP is obviously head coach, which implies there must be an extended coaching staff ( which we know) Bruno we know about, what about the other end of the pitch ? we've asked the question befopre, does anyone know if we actually have an attacking/finishing or 'offensive' coach ( I hate that word, although or finishing is offensive!)

I’ve been thinking about DCL and Connolly. People are quick to write Aaron off but he’s gone straight from playing in the U23’s to the Premier League. It took DCL a good 2-3 seasons to really hit real form. I wonder whether it might be the same with Connolly.

An excellent point and one that I feel explains our reluctance to enter the £40m+ £100k a week market.
There are no sure things.

You're right about those strikers wanting the ball in space. One thing that confuses me a bit about our tactics is that we seem to have established that we like to hold on to the ball and work chances, but at the same time I keep seeing our strikers sitting on defenders shoulders making little runs and wanting the ball played in their path, but it rarely comes. It seems a dichotomy, if the tactics are not to make those through balls then the strikers wouldn't be doing that, but they do regularly.

The centre backs play a lot of those balls, but from deep and rarely good. Although Burn played some lovely through passes against Blackpool. But the midfielders aren't doing it. When we're on top in games when scores are level we're very good at regaining possession, so I'd like to see us take more chances with those balls, risking losing the ball more but also creating more potential

Mac Allister looks to the key to unlocking those situations, and Trossard has the skill to do it as well. Let's see what Moder can do in the middle also.

Was Bremner ahead of Nelson in that third division promotion year? That goes to show how memory does tricks. I thought Nelson almost broke Ward's record that season, but time does these tricks on us. Completely with you with Andone. It does annoy me when players fall out with managers and the like. They are all supposed to be professional, which means at work, you just get on with job whether you like people or not. It's the reverse of professional all of this falling out with people. I'd like to see Andone given a go and I see it as both the manager and players job to get things sorted out. If they can't then get HR on it and start docking wages.
