Why are the Brighton declarations so late?

It's 7am and 8am for Pavilion and Kemp Town. Why is it so late? How come all the Sunderland seats can declare by midnight, yet Brighton is eight hours later? Just out of curiosity really, but does anyone know the explanation for this? Frustraring for people who are waiting to hear the results.

A serious answer for you. Is it down to the number of voters in the constituency? Perhaps Sunderland have much smaller number of voters therefore its counted quicker?

The first Sunderland constituency had about 38000 total votes as opposed to Brighton Pavilion's approx 52000. So yes, that will have made a difference.

Late? I took this picture at about noon, and the guy in the top-hat facing us was still an MP for another 3-4 hours.

I've only just realised it's Andrew George, ex-MP for West Cornwall and Scilly, which I think was the last seat declared.

Sunderland made a decision years ago that they wanted to be the first constituency to declare results so they put in place special transport for the ballot boxes, loads more staff, etc than other authorities. Although it doesn't make any difference in the grand scheme of things, it always guarantees them their moment in the sun as all the news agencies want to be at the first results and Sunderland can offer this to them.
