The benefit of physical shopping is that you can go home with what you want and when you want it, you don't have to wait for it to be delivered or pay for the delivery or hope that someone is at home when it is delivered.

When I go shopping for clothes (once or twice a year at most!), I like to prod and poke the merchandise to check the quality and see what it looks like 'in the flesh', you can't do that online.

I also like to support small independent retailers and producers where I can.
But a lot of people do do that, but they don't buy anything and then go home and order online what they looked at.

It’s a shame.

All these traditional shops disappearing from the High Streets to be replaced by Turkish barbers, dessert restaurants , shisha bars, nail bars.

Some parts of Brighton look like downtown Ankara.
Wonder who ever thought a dessert restaurant was a feasible business plan? Wouldn't happen on Dragon's Den 😀

They are quite popular in Muslim and other countries where people don’t drink / can get publicly murdered for touching booze.

Somewhere to socialise in the evenings.

Some of the milkshakes are nice but it’s mostly horrendous sugary, squirty cream, gack.

And the surroundings would give me anxiety. All neon and flashing lights. It’d be like sitting in a pinball machine.

The Kindle hasn’t helped WHS. I prefer real books, my wife Kindle. Each to their own I guess.
CAMRB here.

WH Smug went wrong when it refused to sell Never Mind the Bollocks.
I think it stopped selling Gay Times too.
Private Eye went for them in the 80s.

There are only so many grannies to sell knitting patterns to.

Even with an offer on Toffo and Evian.

I found my Dad's stash of "Parade" magazines when I was 8, not sure if he got them from WHS

I find myself conflicted with this news. On the one hand, the demise of the high street saddens me. On the other, of all the shops that I'd like to see go to the wall, WH Smiths tops the list. Hugely inflated prices and non-existent customer service. I wouldn't miss Smiths at all, although would rather they were there than another empty shop unit.

My understanding was that they are going to sell the shops as a profitable business, not just close them all. And retain the post offices.

I assume they will be making one last push to sell us a large bar of Dairy Milk, before they finally go out of business.
