Just as a heads up - although regulars will already know - I saw a notice at Lewes Station last week that Lewes Station will be closed again this year after 5pm - last trains through could be as early as 4pm.

‘Stations that are closed will be Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde and Southease stations from 5pm on Tuesday 5th November 2024, until first trains in the morning 6th November 2024.’

Don’t travel to Lewes Bonfire celebrations tomorrow.

That’s the message from Sussex Police, as a number of road closures and changes to train services will be in place.

Standing for a few hours is beyond me now but would go every year and enjoyed it.

I've only been twice, last time must have been 2005/6? Parked just before the snail tunnel on the verge (yes I know it's not the name but that name has been passed down 2 generations now). Just can't get there anymore, no trains, no one allowed in. What happens if you drive & live there? It doesn't seem very fair that you can't get to your house after 5pm.

I was going regularly to Lewes bonfire night when I was at school in Lewes over 45 years ago. It was crowded then but still localised.

It’s just got out of hand in recent years so I don’t think there’s anything untoward in the police encouraging people not to travel to the area for public health and safety reasons- it was never supposed to be the biggest bonfire night in the World which is what it turned into.

Its not like policing a 30,000 crowd of relatively sober fans at the Amex - Lewes is a warren of small streets so bottle necks and crowd crushing can happen - the event is spread over a wide area much of which is in darkness away from the main drag.

Lewes bonfire night has always been highly politicised too and in the current environment, it probably does come with an element of risk of terrorist related activity.

of course they do. though it had got silly with 60-80k crowds, pissed up outsiders not knowing where to go, no room to see anything or move around. not been for years but sounds like it's a sensible level to be more enjoyable.

I absolutely hated it the one time I went. Very dangerous and just an excuse for the yoof to terrorise people with firecrackers, commit vandalism (or even arson) and pissed up idiots causing trouble.

Saw three separate assaults the one occasion I went some 20 years ago. Had the misfortune of having to change trains at Lewes one bonfire night since and it was like a zoo.

Never, ever again.
