Royal Bank of Scotland, effectively the same as Nat West as both are under the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. :)

Also as someone said earlier, we own the majority shareholding

Yes,RBS took over Natwest some years ago,and I've been both Natwest (and National Provincial before the merger with the Westminster) and RBS for ten years or more.Apart from "us" owning them,RBS is pretty good except when you phone their mortgage section when you may need to be bilingual to understand the funny McAccents !

But a vote for RBS.......and good luck whatever.

By the seaside in West Somerset
we have accounts with Lloyds (main) Barclays and Halifax - all crap tbh and wouldn't recommend any of them.

I'd stay with Natwest if I were you

Co-operative. I used to bank NatWest until I went in one day and asked to withdraw £3000 in cash from my own account "What do you want it for?" asked the sullen-faced bitch behind the counter "What are YOU f***ing doing with YOUR wages this weekend?" I asked her right back

Way out west
Never had a problem with Barclays in 30 years.

Personal loans, house bridging loans and business finance.

Three fraudulent uses of my credit card all cleared up within days and fully refunded without question.

no, they really are not.

I've found Halifax to always be helpfull and friendly, across about half dozen branches i've used. they seem to have kept the building society mentality, at least in their customer services and any problems are sorted quickly. they are pretty good, no complaints.

I have had the exact opposite experience with Halifax since its merger to form HBOS. The local branch (Burgess Hill) is worse than useless and no doubt now that they have merged/been bought out by Lloyds they will be looking to close one or the other and I hope that it is Halifax.

First Direct. Great bank to offset savings against your mortgage

Agree. After a miserable experience of attempting to get a mortgage from other high street names, a dozen years ago, opened current accounts with First Direct and raised an offset mortgage on our current house to buy business premises. Very professional and friendly. Offset system great for freelancers needing a good home for fees received, until needed for twice yearly tax bills.

Another vote for the Co-operative Bank. The phone service in particular is knowledgeable and efficient, they're ethical and sensible AND, if you become a member (which is free), they don't bother you with loyalty/your points/airmiles gubbins. They simply pay a cash dividend every quarter into your bank account. The more you do with them (bank account, shopping in their stores, credit card, savings, mortgage etc) the more cash you get back.

Cheers guys, some really good recommendations on here.

I have decided to try FIRST DIRECT out to start with, however, if for any reason I don't get on with that, next stop will be, the CO-OPERATIVE.

Thanks

Another massive vote for CO-OP! Aside from all the ethical reasons, their customer service is faultless, UK based, and extremely helpful and efficient. The card reader for verifying online banking transactions is very cool, looks like a calculator. When you use it though, just remember to put your card in the card reader and not your calculator - eh Lush? :)
