Think Major would have shown a level headed approach. He certainly would have gone cross party with a lot of stuff.

I would never vote tory, but I agree, he's virtually a socialist compared to many of the arses around now. I can't think of many better off the top of my head. As you say, he'd be working with any competent MP regardless of party . . . you'd be lucky to get a majority of competence anyway.

You have to have a bit of sympathy for Johnson (yes I know, not allowed on NSC - I fully expect to be shouted down by outraged Boris haters) - obviously had a long time ambition to become PM, and must have been thrilled when got the job, and looking forward to enjoying it - then only weeks later te country is hit with a huge unprecedented disaster which was none of his doing - a global pandemic the like of which we haven't ecperienced in living memory, with no previous experience to call on, no previously proven road map, nothing.

I suspect in a few year's time history will judge him as having got some things wrong and some things right, but all in all generally muddling through pretty much as well as anybody else would have/could have done

He does seem far more steady these days and always calls out Johnson as an arse.
But don't forget that his favourite food is peas, the cones hotline was a roaring success and he penetrated Edwina Currie over his desk whilst married to Norma.

The qualities you're looking for is an excellent, clear and consistent communicator (Johnson only is the first of these), and one with a good scientific and operational understanding.
Of recent UK PM's, and for all his faults, Blair fits closest.

The care homes, sending kids to school for 1 day, Christmas, letting 1000's in unchecked, track and chase debacle, contracts to mates, the list is very long, with another to add to it today.
The poorest leader at the worse of times and he thinks he is Winston Churchill, what a joke.

The first responsibility of a government is to protect its citizens. Anyone willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve that, would do a better job than Boris, who is failing. Actions could include the imposition of martial law, anti-vaxxers' banned from all social media and their wages stopped, compulsory transportation of persistent transgressors to St. Kilda, and compulsory vaccinations for all others unless medically indicated otherwise. All dissent, strikes and protests outlawed until further notice.

As I said, we'll see how hstory, not hysteria, judges the government's Covid responses in a few year's time.

trouble is we're too politicised over general issues in this country. whoever was in charge would sway too much to headlines and focus groups and not enough on medium term outlook. we've done nearly the same things as rest of europe, changed some things for a particular outlook, but offered no real leadership. i dont see many politicans today offering leadership.
