It's their country and they can do what they like but this tradition of allowing outgoing presidents to just pardon whomever they feel like just seems bonkers to me and very unlike what you would expect from a republic. Seems more like a practice you'd find in an absolute monarchy / kingdom.

Loads of people found guilty of crimes and serving the sentence handed down by a judge are simply going to be allowed to walk free with their crime struck from the records - madness. This isn't a comment or reflection on Trump in particular btw, as I am aware that this has been the custom for departing presidents since god knows when. I just don't see what purpose it serves? Surely they could be given a more positive final privilege, such as granting bursaries or scholarships to deserving people from difficult backgrounds, as opposed to letting a load of cons walk free.

Yes, he can issue a pre-emptive pardon,as Gerald Ford did for Nixon. However, the pardon only applies to Federal charges, not State-level charges and a pardon can be overruled if he did it to protect himself from criminal prosecution, as that is obstruction of justice.

Its not a final privilege. A president can issue pardons an commutations at any time during his presidency. Trump, to date has issued less than Obama or Clinton. It is a tradition to issuea final lot just before you leave office. Clinton issued 80 on his final day and it was a pretty controversial list of dodgy business men, as i recall.
