Ever since we moved into the Amex, Palace being the long term dominant club looked like becoming a temporary thing. We are currently ahead of them in every single department. The changeover may not complete this season, but it is clearly imminent to anyone with a functioning brain. Hope you enjoyed your decades of illgotten superiority, lads.

In all honesty, there's a great chance that we'll be relegated next May, not helped by signing no strikers. Palace could well go down too. We can all take the P out of them, but the league table next May will reveal all. Far too early in September to determine that we now hold the ascendancy.

We're not better than them in all areas on the pitch, probably not even on average on the pitch.

Not sure I can agree with that. Cabaye, Townsend, Benteke have been living off reputations from years ago now.

Benteke scored 15 for Palace last year. Do we have a 15 goal striker?

Well the season's just started, so who knows. The obsession with a 15-20 goal striker is a nonsense anyway.

Defoe scored a tonne last season. Sunderland went down.

Summat like Burnley, West Brom, Watford, Bournemouth all had a top scorer with 10 or below. All stayed up, some comfortably. I'm fussed about whether the team does enough to stay up or not, not about individual accolades.

Couldn't agree more. That's a quarter of a football team right there - if they were really all that good, Palace wouldn't have won just six games throughout 2016. They're all very ordinary over-rated players. Benteke barely makes the subs bench for a small nation like Belgium these days.

I just think, if they were half decent surely, surely one of them would've grabbed one of these games against the likes of Swansea by the scruff of the neck, and dragged their side to a victory?

Well it doesn't look like it.

Who is obsessed with it? Of course you go down if a decent striker is the only thing you have. Ideally you have a good striker as well as being good elsewhere. IMO Benteke is better than Hemed and Murray.

I'm fussed about whether the team does enough to stay up or not, not about individual accolades.
Obviously we all are, no one said otherwise. I said 'We're not better than them in all areas on the pitch'.

But...
A cohesive unit, which we are, gets you more points than an expensively assembled starting eleven that doesn't click.
Indeed - right now we're a better team, managed better, with better team spirit and a better work ethic. But that doesn't mean that individually our players are better than theirs.

Ah it's that time where you tediously pick through every single point of somebody who disagrees with you, by breaking it down line by line.

Why did you bother even saying it then?

Mellotron is right, this "obsession" (I don't think he meant it in it's most literal sense, by the way  ) doesn't tell you anything like the whole story of a player's worth. Why bother highlighting Benteke's goal scoring record as opposed to say, the distance Cabaye runs in an average game?

His point is clearly that we are possibly a better team than them because those three players highlighted are living off past glories. It's a good point well made, and IMO is not refutable simply because Benteke scored 15 goals last season.

Your levels of pedantry are truly breath-taking.

Ah it's that time where you can't argue your case so you resort to insults

I break down the posts so I can make it clear which bit I'm responding to.

You said this:

"Benteke scored 15 for Palace last year. Do we have a 15 goal striker?"

What I said was "We're not better than them in all areas on the pitch, probably not even on average on the pitch."
It's a simple point, that while I think our manager is better, our ground is better, our training facilities are better, our team spirit is better, etc etc, I don't think our players are individually better all over the pitch. Mellotron disagreed and mentioned Benteke as an example. I think Benteke is a better striker than Hemed or Murray. Is that really a pedantic argumentative opinion to have?

Why bother highlighting Benteke's goal scoring record as opposed to say, the distance Cabaye runs in an average game?
While I agree that there is more to a striker than the goals they score (like hold up play, defending from the front, etc), the goals scored is quite a big deal and it was an easy thing to mention. As above, is it really that outrageous that I think Benteke is better than our strikers?

His point is clearly that we are possibly a better team than them because those three players highlighted are living off past glories. It's a good point well made
But I've already said that I think we're a better team at the moment, I just think that not every one of our players is better than every one of theirs. I think that when Palace start getting a system that works for them, that their players believe, that they'll improve and will create chances and score goals. They played well against Burnley IMO, and Loftus-Cheek looks like a good player to me.

I gave an opinion that I don't think all of our players are better than all of theirs, I don't know what the problem with that is.

Reidewald has played for a big side in Ajax 92 times and is capped at Dutch level, are you honestly suggesting Dunk or Duffy are better??

Cabaye was quality most of last season so not sure what you're on about??

Fosu-Mensah is highly regarded at MU and Mourinho rates him as a huge prospect, that's good enough for me.

Zaha is one of the best players outside the top 6 teams.

Can I suggest both Duffy and Dunk are better, and so is BFG, and so is Goldson.
