Rock and Metal was absolutely huge in the 80s; I guess there’s quite a few 50 somethings on this board!

Yes, there was a lot of it on daytime radio back then, much to my annoyance.

Now when I'm forced to listen to daytime radio, I'm struck by how 'urban' the playlists are now.

It's almost refreshing to see local stations like Hastings Rock given temporary licences from time to time. Not because I want to listen to it, I don't! , but because there must be a large audience out there no longer so well catered for in the new mainstream.

It reminds me of why Pirate radio stations had to start up years ago. Back then genres like Reggae, and I don't mean the standard half a dozen Wailers tunes that get done to death everywhere, just didn't get any airplay.

Thank God for internet radio now! Everyone is spoilt for choice if they just do even a tiny bit of digging.

Most definitely some local Swedish punk band that I have no memory of as my mum has told me she used to take me to those.

First I can remember would be Swedish rapper Timbuktu back in 2001 at the Djingis Khan (mine, and his, neighborhood) block party.

Went to a lot of festivals with my parents as a kid, including the Isle of White in 1970. But probably say Madness with John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett at the Brighton Center around 1979. Been following John Otway ever since.

The Police, Brighton Centre, autumn 1979.

During 80/81 Sunday night gigs at Jenkinsons were brilliant… Dead Kennedy, Spizz, Killing Joke, Tenpole Tudor, Wah. Apparently Joy Division played there at some point but missed that ?..

I have just done some Googling and yes, it was.

I thought it might be. I don't remember a lot of other rock gigs at the Winter Gardens. It was the tour for 'On A Storyteller's Night' and my main memory of the gig was the lead singer constantly reaching down to shake everyone's hand.

I can’t recall any other rock gigs at Eastbourne myself. I looked at other tour dates and they also played Coasters in Brighton on that tour; strange venues.

This was a brilliant time as me and my mates went to gig after gig during the mid to late 80s….you name them we almost certainly saw them. Tickets were usually a fiver for Hammersmith O and a bit more if it was Wembley. Most of the big bands played Hammersmith though.

Queen was my first concert (Crazy Tour) Monday 10th Dec 1979 and then 42 years, 6 months and 8 days later (ie last Saturday) I saw them again at the O2.
Sorry I'm one who believed Queen died when Freddie died

I saw loads of concerts in Brighton in the early 80s. As you say, usually £5/6 a ticket and you got one just by queuing up at the venue. On line secondary ticket sites have made it far too expensive. I wouldn’t have given a second thought of going to a concert a fortnight back in the day, not now though.

Saw Humble Pie at the Dome but it was the support act who stole the show for me, a certain David Bowie. It was about 69 when I was 14

Yes, I think I paid a fiver for the first gig I went to at the Centre: Thin Lizzy's farewell tour in 1983, supported by Mama's Boys. The following year we went to Donington and saw AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy etc. I've just Googled the ticket and found that the advanced price was eleven quid!

In the 80's and into the 90's I would regularly go to Reggae concerts on a Sunday, usually Brixton Academy, Astoria or Town & Country Club (later changed to The Forum) then see the same concert again on the Monday night down at The Top Rank Suite in Brighton or Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone.

As you say, concerts seemed affordable then. Brilliant times!

Best of all with the Reggae concerts at The Top Rank Suite, support would be by King Tafari Love Muzic Sound System playing roots tunes all night.
