Of those 4, I'd say either Benn or Calzaghe (though Calzaghe was never a middleweight, at least certainly not at championship level).

None of the 4 would come close to Hagler, Leonard, Duran, Hopkins or Hearns at their peaks though (that said though, Duran's peak was probably at welter).

For sheer one punch KO power though, none of the above comes anywhere close to Julian 'The Hawk' Jackson.

what a fight Calzaghe v Eubank (in his prime) would have been. Think it would rank alongside the Benn v Eubank ones

Wasnt Durans peak at Lightweight ?

I think its to easy to say Hopkins, Leonard, Hearns etc would have beaten them, Benn beat McClellan who at the time was considered a mini Mike Tyson after bashing everybody before him including Jackson.

I think Eubank was very underated probably because he was involved in some real stinkers in the 10 fights in a year roadshow.
But he did beat and draw with Benn and defeat Watson twice.
Calzaghe did not fight a prime Eubank.

I think Watson was a technicialy very good boxer but came up short against McCallum so couldnt be considered true world class.

By the way the best punch in my humble opinion was Hearns vs Duran, he was out cold before he hit the deck.

I'd personally say Julian Jackson's KO of Herol Graham would win that category, but that's just my view.

Steve Collins

And I quote from wikipedia:

'In 1994 [Collins] defeated Chris Pyatt to secure the WBO middleweight belt. The following year he relinquished this title without a defence, moving up to super-middleweight and defeating the previously unbeaten Chris Eubank in Millstreet to take the WBO title. He defended this title successfully seven times (including a second meeting with Eubank and two fights against Nigel Benn). '

i cant believe no one has mentioned alan minter
went to america and won his title
and if he never wound hagler up the way he did
maybe he would have held on to it longer
he can still say he was undisputed champion
which none of those in this poll can

Just out of interest, and as we're on the subject, who would people say is the best/their favourite (whichever you prefer) boxer in any weight division, and of any nationality?

My Top 5 would be (in no specific order, and this is more favourite than technically best):

1) 'The Greatest Of All Time' Muhammad Ali
2) 'JC Superstar' Julio Cesar Chavez
3) Arturo ' Thunder' Gatti
4) 'Golden Boy' Oscar De La Hoya
5) Lennox Lewis

1) Ali - for obvious reasons
2) Foreman - in his prime (aka pre-Rumble in the Jungle). The man was an absolute beast, and never broke a sweat in beating GIANTS like Frasier
3) Hagler
4) Duran
5) De La Hoya

Herol Bomber Graham.

Always f***ed up when it mattered though!

i voted Eubank, even though I was at the Brighton Centre when he fought Eduardo Contrerras. That was awful! The biggest cheer was when the news was announced that the Albion had won away, at York if I remeber rightly. A good chorus of "Seagulls" in the Brighton Centre made it worhtwhile going!

Split between Benn & Eubank.

Eubank gets my vote as I seem to remember that the day he won the WBO title, Albion were away to West Ham with us chanting "Eubank" and them "Benn". Great atmosphere!

I always thought Nigel Benn was incredibly overrated myself. Eubank was boring to watch compared to Watson but usually got the job done whoever he was fighting.
