Most of the posts on this thread quote players in slow decline. Not quite sure that counts as a Marquee Signing ie a Statement Of Intent for the future

Counts for me. Are you saying if we signed an ageing Messi or a 39 year old Zlatan Ibrahimovic they wouldn't be marquee signings (with knobs on!) Come on!

Disagree. It's hardly building for the future, it would just be giving a player sliding down the pay grades one last payday without the hassle of having to relocate continents

Well if that's your criteria, then it won't be in the 'modern era' of BHAFC.

Our model is to buy young players and turn them into PL stars rather than buying existing stars as 'marquee signings' for top dollar and massive wages. That's hardly 'building for the future' unless Palarse is your model.

It's not what we are about and if there's an underhanded dig at the clubs policy here based on most of your recent posts being moany, then do one. If not, then apologies.

Brighton is a club that prefers to buy players rather than buying statements of intents. Seems to work fine with the club going from League One to enjoying a (so far) four year tenure in the Premier League all within 10 years.

So why did we take Murray and Zamora back , they had been deemed as past their best. Clough built a European Cup winning team out of no hopers and players past their best....

Well BHAFC got one full season out of Ben White. Then flogged him on earlydoors. Fair play to the player, and to the club really. Not the same as paying top dollar for a STARLET with a future tho eh?

Our biggest marquee signing of all time was when we, as a 4th. division club, signed the England centre forward - that really stunned the football world. He only lasted one full season, but with him on board we smashed the division in spectacular fashion! Marquee!
Three of our best ever signings, who really helped the club kick on, were Ward, Lawrenson annd Zamora. Were they marquee signings? Were they f***! Two of them weren't even playing league football. Did we all gasp in admiration when the club announced they'd signed Yves Bissouma? - like hell we did, but he's another top top signing who is helping the squad progress. Never a marquee signing though.

Best part of £10M for Mac Allister. Several million for Moder. A few million for Caicedo. Is Mwepu young enough to count as a STARLET?. How much money do we have to pay for a STARLET to make them count as MARQUEE?
And if we find an unknown youngster who we develop into a megastar, we can't count him as a marquee SIGNING as not enough people will have heard of him at the time. Quandary, eh?.

For as long as we're in the Premier League I'd be surprised if we'd be in the market for a marquee signing.

Instead we'll progress by producing academy players who go on to be other clubs marquee signings.

Wayne Bridge and shortly after, Matt Upson were both a significant step up in pedigree signings for the club. In fact they were probably a step up for ANY Championship club at that stage, regardless of their injuries etc. Both made a great impact and it was joy to watch them in the stripes.

Wayne Bridge was a great signing, but hardly Marquee. Hadn't he been out injured a lot in the previous couple of seasons and appeared to be way past his best ?

I have to admit, I wasn't expecting what we got and as someone else said earlier, the best season from a Brighton fullback I can remember. He then played a few games for Reading and retired. We got his one brilliant year in his last 5 or so

As a few have said, we are very unlikely to sign one now because of the sort of club we are, but I would suggest Vicente and Bobby Smith and .....err that's about it ?

And Trevor Francis. Record breaking £million signing and established England player. And fellow England star Peter Shilton.

It all really depends on our interpretation of the phrase. ‘marquee signing’, which emanates from the hotel signage so a statement of intent or quality. While Bridge was towards the end of his career, the signing was a statement of intent from Albion, that we were now considering established Premier League players and internationals. Players with real pedigree that we hadn’t seen for many years at the club.
