Too many to call, really, and a lot of it's down to taste. Best in what sense? - most energy/excitement, most original innovation, fastest speed, best technical ability, ability to deliver the right solo at the right time to make a classic moment of rock?
For me personally, I'd go for a top three of Hendrix, Jennifer Batten and Rory Gallagher, with Knopfler and Clapton in close attendance, and if you exclude the speed and technical ability criteria, but with the others in spades, Pete Townsend.
