1st over £1000 was £3,250 for Eric Lancelotte from Charlton Athletic Feb 1948

1st over £10000 was £13,000 for Bill Curry From Newcastle United July 1959

Bill Curry was our top scorer season 59-60 with 26 goals

Died young at 54

Was part of the Lawrenson deal. Stand to be corrected but we got JC plus £900k which valued Lawrenson at over £1m
Not true. Lawrenson cost £900,000 and we spent £350,000 of that on Jimmy Case.

Eric Lancelotte was actually born in India, maybe a BHA record in there somewhere
Although not uncommon back then I'd imagine

Lived to the ripe old age of 90

Two very good shouts there

Andy Ritchie was our first £500,000 signing from Man U, shortly after we'd sold Peter Ward to Forest for £400,000.

I remember us wasting over 100k on a Rochdale player. Don't think he settled down here.

According to Tim Carder & Roger Harris's marvellous Albion A-Z: A Who's Who of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, Mark Lawrenson was indeed our first six figure signing for the oddly precise sum of £111,111.

My memory must have twigged that Lawro wasn't exactly £100k and I went the other way. I was reading somewhere recently that a fee was deliberately under £100k or £1m and got mixed up with Lawro.

Jason Peake, although the fee only reached £95,000 as he didn't play enough games to trigger the final £25,000.

I think that might be Trevor Francis being the first £1m player but Clough said he made it £999,000 or something similar so that he wasn't but everyone said he was?

Blimey,yeah your right

We paid a few quid for players back in the old div one :dunce:

The put them on six year contracts. Otherwise they'd not sing.

Because we were a gauche unfashionable club that everyone knew would never amount to anything.

Times have changed.

Yeah, that's it, I was reading about him recently. I mixed up the two stories

Signed on the same day with Gary Williams from Preston, for an additional £45,000.

My memory may be playing tricks here but I thought he was deliberately bought for £99,000 so he didn't have the pressure of being a £100k player. But that's only a vague memory

I thought it was that we sold him for just under £1m so he wasn't a million pound defender.
